Bali packs beaches, Ubud’s rice terraces, temples and a huge wellness scene onto one easy island — ideal for one to two weeks. Vietnam is a country-long adventure: Hanoi’s old quarter, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An’s lanterns and Saigon’s energy, cheaper and more varied.

The factor that decides it is geography. Bali is one island you can base in; Vietnam is a 1,600 km route from Hanoi to Saigon you have to keep moving through.
The day-to-day numbers favor Vietnam clearly. A glass of street beer in Hanoi is about $0.40, against $1.10 to $4.30 for a bottle in Bali. The Vietnam e-visa is $25; Bali’s visa on arrival is $35 plus a $9.50 tourism levy. Street meals land close, near $0.60 to $1.20 either way.
Flights from the US West Coast run about the same, roughly 20 hours with one stop to either Denpasar or Hanoi, so distance is not the tiebreaker.

Which is better for your trip, Bali or Vietnam?
For families
Verdict: Bali. One island means one base: you can settle the kids into a villa with a pool near Sanur or Nusa Dua and day-trip to Ubud’s rice terraces without ever repacking. Vietnam only pays off if you keep moving along its roughly 1,700 km Hanoi-to-Saigon route, and those overnight trains and internal flights wear young children down fast.
For couples & honeymoons
Verdict: Bali, unless you both love street life. Bali’s wellness scene is built for two: jungle resorts around Ubud, couples spa treatments, sunset temples and surf beaches all within a couple of hours’ drive of each other. Vietnam’s romance is real, especially Hoi An’s lantern-lit old town, but you will spend more of the trip in transit than at the pool.
For budget travelers
Verdict: Vietnam, clearly. You can travel comfortably on under $50 a day, a glass of street beer in Hanoi runs about $0.40, and cheap trains and domestic flights make a long north-to-south route affordable. Bali is still good value by most standards, but comfortable travel there costs noticeably more, and the longer you stay the wider that gap gets.
For foodies
Verdict: Vietnam, and it is not close. This is one of Asia’s great cuisines, and it changes as you move: pho and bun cha in Hanoi’s old quarter, cao lau in Hoi An, banh mi everywhere for around a dollar. Bali eats well, especially around Ubud, but in Vietnam the food is the reason to go, not a side benefit.
