Day trips

Day trips from Kyoto

Kyoto sits in the centre of the most concentrated cluster of UNESCO-listed cultural sites in Japan. Within 90 minutes by train you can reach a sister capital, a sea of deer, two of Japan’s most spectacular castles, and the country’s atomic-history pilgrimage city.

Nara

45 minutes by JR Nara line from Kyoto

Why go
Japan’s first permanent capital, predating Kyoto by 80 years. The Todai-ji temple’s Great Buddha hall is the largest wooden structure in the world; Nara Park’s 1,200 free-roaming deer (sacred messengers) are the famous photo op.
How to get there
JR Nara line rapid service from Kyoto Station (~45 min). Walk from JR Nara station east into the park.
How long to spend
Half day to full day. Add Horyuji (oldest wooden building on earth, 7th century) if you have a full day.
Honest note
Buy proper sika senbei from approved vendors, not stalls outside the park. Deer can be pushy — bow back, they bow first.

Osaka

13-29 minutes (Shinkansen-rapid) from Kyoto

Why go
Japan’s food capital. Takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, and the Dotonbori canal at night. Osaka Castle is a quick stop; the real reason to go is dinner in Namba or Tenma.
How to get there
Shinkansen (13 min) or JR Special Rapid (~29 min) from Kyoto Station. Subway to Namba for food.
How long to spend
Half day works for food + Castle. Full day if you add Universal Studios or the aquarium.
Honest note
Go for dinner specifically. Lunch is good but evenings in Dotonbori with the Glico sign lit up are the experience.

Himeji Castle

55 minutes by Shinkansen from Kyoto

Why go
Japan’s most beautiful surviving original castle. White exterior earned it the nickname ‘White Heron Castle’; the multi-tiered keep is the most photogenic in the country.
How to get there
Shinkansen Hikari/Nozomi from Kyoto Station to Himeji (~55 min). Castle is a 15-minute walk from the station.
How long to spend
Half day. Add Koko-en garden next door for a complete morning.
Honest note
Cherry blossom season (early April) is spectacular here but the castle interior gets a 2-hour queue. Off-season weekday mornings are the move.

Hiroshima + Miyajima

1h 40m by Shinkansen from Kyoto

Why go
The Peace Memorial Museum is unflinching and important. After, take the ferry to Miyajima for the floating torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine — one of Japan’s three iconic views.
How to get there
Shinkansen Nozomi (note: not covered by JR Pass; use Hikari/Sakura instead) from Kyoto to Hiroshima (~1h 40m). JR Sanyo line + ferry to Miyajima (~25 min from Hiroshima).
How long to spend
Long full day, leaving Kyoto by 7-8am. Easier as an overnight if you can spare it.
Honest note
The torii gate has been undergoing periodic restoration; check whether it’s currently visible. Sunset arrival at Miyajima is magical.
