October is when Egypt becomes comfortable again and the season properly restarts. Cairo settles at about 32°C by day, Luxor and Aswan drop into the low thirties, the Western Desert reopens, and the second Abu Simbel Sun Festival falls on Friday 22 October 2027. It is the first month of the good season and the last before high-season prices arrive in full.
The Abu Simbel Sun Festival, 22 October
The second of the two annual alignments. At sunrise on 22 October, light travels roughly sixty metres down the axis of the Great Temple to illuminate the seated figures of Ramses II, Ra-Horakhty and Amun in the inner sanctuary – while Ptah, god of the underworld, remains in shadow, as he was built to.
The temple was relocated in the 1960s to escape the rising waters of Lake Nasser, so the modern dates are a reconstruction of the ancient alignment rather than identical to it.
Practically: you must be inside before dawn, convoys and buses leave Aswan in the small hours, and tickets and transport sell out weeks ahead. There is music and dancing outside afterwards. The October festival is generally a little less crowded than February’s and the weather is better, which makes it the better of the two if you have a choice.

- Cairo and the Delta – about 32°C by day and 20°C at night, with almost no rain. Warm, dry and comfortable, with pleasant evenings returning.
- Luxor and Aswan – low-to-mid thirties, dropping through the month. Full-day sightseeing becomes realistic again by late October.
- The Red Sea – around 31°C with the sea at 27–28°C. Still excellent, and the wind eases.
- Alexandria and the north coast – mid-twenties, quiet, and the first Mediterranean rain returns late in the month.
- The Western Desert – reopens. The White Desert, the Black Desert and Siwa become workable again, with warm days and cool nights.
The Western Desert reopens
From October, the desert circuit is back: Siwa Oasis near the Libyan border, with its salt lakes, the Oracle of Amun and Shali fortress; and the White Desert and Black Desert out of Bahariya, where the chalk formations and overnight camping are the draw.
Nights are cold in the desert even when days are warm, so a proper sleeping bag and warm layers matter. Go with a registered operator and check current access requirements before travelling, as permit rules for the western oases change.
The season restarts
October is the transition. Nile cruises are running full schedules again, foreign arrivals climb steadily, and hotels move from summer to autumn rates through the month. The first two weeks still carry some shoulder pricing; by the end of October the high season has effectively begun.
The practical advice: book Abu Simbel, Nile cruises and the good Luxor hotels for late October well in advance, because demand rises faster than most people expect.
Prices and crowds
Rising through the month from a low base. Early October is still good value; the sun-festival week spikes in Aswan; and by the last week, rates in Luxor and Aswan have largely reset to season prices. The Red Sea remains moderate.
