The turn
September does not feel cool, but it is measurably better than August, and the difference compounds through the month. By the last ten days, Luxor has dropped into the high thirties, mornings are genuinely pleasant, and a temple visit can run to eleven rather than half past nine.
Three things change at once:
- Egyptian schools return in the first half of the month, and the Mediterranean north coast empties within days. Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh rates fall sharply.
- Nile cruises restart in earnest as operators bring boats back for the autumn season.
- Foreign bookings reopen for October onwards, so September is the last month before the season pricing returns.

- Cairo and the Delta – around 32°C by day and 20°C at night, rainless, and noticeably more comfortable than August by the end of the month.
- Luxor and Aswan – high thirties, easing from the low forties. Still an early-morning proposition, but less punishing.
- The Red Sea – 33°C air with the sea still at 28–29°C. Excellent, and quieter than August.
- Alexandria and the north coast – high twenties, with the season winding down and the sea at its warmest.
- The Western Desert – still too hot for the White Desert and Siwa; the season returns in October.
Why late September is the value window
This is the specific recommendation worth acting on. From roughly 20 September:
- The heat has eased enough for comfortable morning sightseeing.
- Domestic demand has collapsed with the school return.
- Foreign high-season pricing has not yet started – that begins in October.
- Nile cruises are running again but not yet full.
The result is October weather at July prices for about ten days. It is the cheapest time to see Egypt in reasonable conditions.
Diving and the Red Sea
September is one of the strongest months on the Red Sea. The water is still at 28–29°C, visibility is at its best, the summer domestic crowds have gone, and the southern liveaboards to the Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone are still running. It combines August’s water with far fewer people.

Low and falling through the first three weeks, then firming at the very end as the autumn season approaches. The north coast drops sharply once schools return; the Nile valley stays cheap all month; the Red Sea is moderate and good value.
