April is when Stockholm reopens. Daylight passes fourteen and a half hours by mid-month, the cherry trees in Kungsträdgården flower, the terraces put chairs out on the first warm afternoon, and the month ends with Valborg on 30 April – bonfires, choirs and the loudest night of the Swedish spring – running straight into the 1 May holiday.
The cherry blossom in Kungsträdgården
The double row of cherry trees in Kungsträdgården, in the middle of the city, is Stockholm’s blossom event. Peak is usually in the second half of April, but it shifts by a week or two with the spring, and the full display lasts only about a week to ten days.
It is small compared with Japan and it is extremely central, so it is busy at lunchtime and on weekends. Early morning is the answer. There is more blossom – and far fewer people – in the Bergianska botanical garden and around Djurgården.
Valborg, 30 April
Valborgsmässoafton – Walpurgis Night – is the formal end of the Swedish winter, marked with bonfires, male-voice choirs singing in the spring, and fireworks. In 2027 it falls on a Friday, with 1 May a public holiday on the Saturday, which makes it a substantial weekend.
- In Stockholm – the best-known bonfires are at Skansen and on Riddarfjärden; local parks hold smaller ones.
- In Uppsala – forty minutes away by train, and the real event. Valborg there is a full-day student festival involving a river raft race, the ceremonial donning of white caps, and an enormous crowd. Trains back are packed; check the last departure before you go.
- 30 April is also the King’s birthday, marked with a flag-raising and a changing of the guard at the Royal Palace.
Saturday 1 May is Labour Day, a public holiday, with political marches through the centre and most shops shut.
Weather: optimistic, not reliable
- Temperature – about 10°C by day and 2°C at night on average. The swing is the story: an April week in Stockholm can deliver 18°C sunshine or wet sleet.
- Frost – still common overnight, especially early in the month.
- Snow – occasional and short-lived. It rarely settles.
- Rain – April is one of the driest months of the Stockholm year, which is part of why it works.
- Daylight – about 14h 35m mid-month, with light until well past 20:30 by the end of April.
The practical consequence: Stockholmers sit outside in coats at the first hint of sun. Terraces open in April on optimism, not on temperature, and blankets are provided.
What opens
April is the reopening month for the outdoor attractions. Skansen moves into its full season, Djurgården’s parks and the Rosendal garden café become the obvious afternoon, and city boat tours restart. The archipelago is still on a reduced timetable – Vaxholm and Fjäderholmarna are straightforward, the outer islands are not until June.
Prices and crowds
April is shoulder season and good value, with two exceptions: the Easter weekend when it falls in April, and the Valborg–1 May weekend, when Stockholm and especially Uppsala fill up. In 2027 Easter falls in March, so only the end of the month is affected.
What to pack
