October is the month Stockholm falls between its two seasons. The summer timetables have ended, the Christmas markets have not started, daylight drops from about eleven and a half hours to eight and a half, and on Sunday 31 October the clocks go back – after which it is dark by five. It is the cheapest month that is not mid-winter, and it suits a particular kind of trip very well.
What October is not
Being honest about this saves disappointment. In October you do not get the archipelago at full service, terraces, swimming, or Christmas markets. What is left is the indoor city, the autumn forests around it, and low prices.
What October is
- Peak autumn colour in the first half. Djurgården, the Haga park and the nature reserves are at their best in the first week or two, in light that stays low all day.
- The museum month. The Vasa, the Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet, Fotografiska and the Historiska are all indoor and all far quieter than in summer. Several of Sweden’s state museums have free entry to their permanent collections – check before you pay.
- Saunas and cold-water bathhouses. With swimming over, the bastu takes over. The waterside sauna-and-dip is a much more October activity than it sounds.
- Value. Hotel rates fall away from the summer, with midweek business travel the main thing keeping them up.
- Mushroom season continues into the first half of the month under allemansrätten, the Swedish right of public access.
The clocks go back on 31 October
Central European Summer Time ends on the last Sunday of October – 31 October in 2027. Clocks go back an hour at 03:00, and the effect in Stockholm is abrupt because the daylight is already falling by four minutes a day:
- Early October – about 11h 30m of daylight; sunset near 18:20.
- 30 October – about 8h 45m; sunset near 16:45.
- 1 November – sunset near 15:40.
If you are visiting in the last week of October, you lose the useful end of the afternoon overnight. Plan outdoor things for the mornings from that point on.

- Temperature – about 10°C by day and 5°C at night, falling through the month. The last week can be close to freezing overnight.
- Rain and wind – October is wet and it is the windiest stretch of the autumn. Atlantic systems arrive in sequence.
- Snow – unlikely but not impossible at the very end of the month.
- Daylight – about 10h 05m mid-month.
The archipelago in autumn
Services are on a reduced autumn timetable. Vaxholm and Fjäderholmarna remain straightforward and are genuinely good in October – empty, low light, open water – but the outer islands are hard to reach and many island restaurants and hotels have closed for the season. Check both the ferry timetable and whether anything is open at the other end before you commit.
Prices and crowds
One of the cheapest months of the year for accommodation outside mid-winter, and the quietest for the major museums. Business travel keeps midweek city-centre rates firmer than weekends, so a Friday-to-Sunday trip is better value than Tuesday to Thursday.
What to pack
