June is the best and the most treacherous month to visit Stockholm. The light is extraordinary – 18 hours 38 minutes at the solstice, and never properly dark at all – but Midsummer Eve, Friday 25 June 2027, is the day the entire city closes and leaves. Plan around that one date and June is close to perfect.
Midsummer: the date that decides your trip
Midsummer is the second-biggest holiday in the Swedish year, and unlike Christmas it catches visitors out because it moves. Midsummer Day is the Saturday falling between 20 and 26 June; in 2027 that is Saturday 26 June, making Midsummer Eve Friday 25 June. The Eve is the day that matters.
On Midsummer Eve, in Stockholm:
- Almost everything closes – shops, supermarkets, most restaurants, many museums. Systembolaget shuts and is closed the whole weekend; buy any alcohol by the Thursday.
- Public transport runs a holiday timetable, thinner than a Sunday.
- The city empties. Stockholmers go to the countryside and the archipelago. Central streets are genuinely deserted, which is eerie and rather wonderful, but there is nowhere to eat.
- Trains, ferries and roads out are packed on the Thursday evening and Friday morning.
If you are in Stockholm for it, Skansen is the answer – the open-air museum runs the full public midsummer: raising and dressing the maypole, ring dances, folk music, and the traditional food. It is the one reliable place to actually experience the holiday rather than a closed city. Book and arrive early.
The light, precisely
Stockholm at 59.3°N does not have the midnight sun – the sun does set. What it has is arguably better: at the solstice the sun drops only about 7 degrees below the horizon at its lowest, so it never gets properly dark. From roughly late May to mid-July there is no true night in Stockholm, only a long blue dusk that runs into dawn.

The true midnight sun requires the Arctic Circle – Kiruna and Abisko, about 1,250 km north, where the sun does not set at all from late May to mid-July.
Weather and water
- Temperature – about 20°C by day and 11°C at night. Warm rather than hot, and evenings are cool.
- Rain – June is wetter than the spring months; showers are common and rarely last.
- Sea temperature – around 15°C early in the month, rising through it. Swimmable by the end of June for most people, cold at the start.
National Day and graduation
- Sunday 6 June – National Day, a public holiday. Flag ceremonies, the Royal Palace opening its doors, and celebrations at Skansen. Quieter than Midsummer, and shops are largely closed.
- Early and mid-June – studenten, the school graduation. School leavers in white caps ride through the city on decorated flatbed trucks with sound systems, families wave placards with baby photos, and it is loud, cheerful and completely unmissable if you are there. It is a real Stockholm sight and costs nothing.
The archipelago opens properly
From mid-June the full archipelago timetables run and the outer islands – Sandhamn, Utö, Finnhamn, Möja – become day-trip viable rather than expeditions. This is the start of the three-month window when the archipelago genuinely works, and June has the light without July’s crowds.
Prices and crowds
Rates climb through June and peak around Midsummer weekend, when the countryside and the archipelago fill and city hotels can actually soften. Book accommodation and any archipelago stay well ahead for the Midsummer weekend specifically.
What to pack
Layers, a light waterproof, and something genuinely warm for evenings on the water – the archipelago is much cooler than the city. Sunglasses. An eye mask is not a joke if you are a light sleeper; Swedish blinds are often thin and it does not get dark. See the Sweden itinerary.
