March is the fastest-changing month in Stockholm. It starts in winter and ends in spring: daylight climbs from about ten and a half hours to over thirteen, the equinox passes on 20 March, and in 2027 Easter and the clock change land on the same day – Sunday 28 March. It is also the month the ice stops being safe.
Light: the crossover month
By the equinox, everywhere on Earth has roughly twelve hours of daylight. What makes Stockholm interesting is what happens next: because it sits at 59.3°N, from late March until late September it has more daylight than the tropics, and the gap widens fast. March is where that flips.
- 1 March – about 10h 45m of daylight.
- 15 March – about 11h 45m.
- 20 March – the spring equinox.
- 31 March – about 13h 15m, and after the clock change the light lasts until nearly 19:30.
The clock change, and Easter, on 28 March 2027
Central European Summer Time begins on the last Sunday of March, which in 2027 is 28 March – the same day as Easter Sunday. Clocks go forward one hour at 02:00. Coming in the same week as an already rapid gain in daylight, the effect is dramatic: the evening suddenly has light in it.
Swedish Easter is a significant holiday and it empties the city:
- Thursday 25 March – Skärtorsdagen. Children dress as påskkärringar, Easter witches, in headscarves and painted cheeks, and go door to door for sweets.
- Friday 26 March – Långfredagen (Good Friday), a public holiday. This is the quietest day of the Swedish year: shops closed, most restaurants closed, muted everything.
- Sunday 28 March – Easter Sunday, and the clock change. The big family meal, egg-heavy and closer to a smörgåsbord than a roast.
- Monday 29 March – Annandag påsk (Easter Monday), a public holiday.
Plan food around Good Friday specifically. Many Stockholmers leave for the countryside over the long weekend, so the city is quiet and pleasant – but shut.
Weather: winter, then not
- Temperature – about 4°C by day and −2°C at night on average, but the spread across the month is large. Early March can be properly frozen; late March can be 10°C.
- Snow – possible all month and common early. Late snowfalls happen and rarely last.
- Underfoot – the worst month for it. Freeze-thaw cycles make pavements icy in the morning and wet by afternoon. Grip still matters.
- Precipitation – still low; March is among the drier months.
The ice is no longer safe
This is the one genuine safety point for March in Stockholm. Lake and sea ice that carried skaters in February deteriorates from underneath as the sun strengthens, and it can look completely unchanged while losing most of its strength. Organised skating tours move further north or stop entirely. Do not go out on ice in March on your own judgement, however solid it looks.
Sportlov, and prices
Stockholm’s school sportlov is week 9, falling in the first days of March in 2027. Family attractions, Skansen and the trains north are busy for it. Beyond that week and Easter, March is still low season: hotel rates stay near their winter level until the Easter weekend pushes them up.
What to pack
