June is the cheapest month to be in Thailand and, if you put yourself on the right coast, one of the most pleasant. The southwest monsoon is established on the Andaman side; the Gulf islands are still in their dry season; the north is green and clear for the first time since January; and Bangkok gets its rain in a single violent hour most afternoons rather than all day.
Where to be in June
The two-coast rule decides everything. The Andaman coast runs on the southwest monsoon from roughly May to October. The Gulf islands are sheltered from it and take their rain from the northeast monsoon in October to December, so their dry season covers January to August.
- Go to the Gulf – Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao. June is comfortably inside their dry run, and they are far cheaper than in the northern-hemisphere winter.
- Go north – Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai and Mae Hong Son are green, the smoke is long gone, the waterfalls are running and the rice terraces are being planted. The north in June is genuinely beautiful and almost nobody is there.
- Bangkok works – hot and wet, but the rain is concentrated and the city is entirely indoor-capable.
- Think twice about the Andaman – Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta are cheap and half-empty, which some people love, but you are accepting rain on most days, rough seas and red flags.
Weather by region
- Bangkok – about 33°C by day and 26°C at night, with roughly 200 mm across thirteen days. The pattern matters more than the total: a heavy late-afternoon downpour, often under an hour, then it clears.
- Phuket and the Andaman – about 30°C with roughly 180 mm and rain on most days. Seas are rough; some longtail and island-hopping services suspend.
- Chiang Mai and the north – about 32°C with around 120 mm across twelve days – noticeably drier than the far south, and cooler at night.
- Koh Samui and the Gulf – still dry season. This is the argument for June.
Red flags on the Andaman coast
Worth repeating because it kills tourists every year: during the southwest monsoon, Andaman beaches including Patong, Karon and Kata post red flags for rip currents. Lifeguard cover is not continuous, and swimming when the red flags are up is dangerous and in places illegal. If the flag is red, do not go in – regardless of how calm the water looks from the sand.
What is closed
The Similan and Surin islands are shut from 16 May to 14 October – a fixed annual closure by Thailand’s Department of National Parks, not a weather decision. Several other Andaman marine parks apply seasonal restrictions across the same window, so check any specific island before booking a trip around it.
Diving continues elsewhere: the Gulf, and Koh Tao in particular, runs year-round and June is a good month for it.
Prices: the lowest of the year
June is the deepest part of the Thai green season. Andaman resorts discount heavily, Bangkok hotels are soft, and flights are at their cheapest. The Gulf islands sit at shoulder rates while delivering dry-season weather, which remains the single best value combination in the Thai calendar.

Practical notes
- Plan mornings, keep afternoons flexible. The rain has a schedule and it is usually late afternoon. Temples, markets and boat trips in the morning; malls, massages and long lunches when it comes down.
- Quick-dry everything. Cotton does not dry in Thai humidity in June. A light rain jacket is less useful than an umbrella, which every 7-Eleven sells.
- Mosquitoes increase in the wet season. Dengue is present in Thailand year-round and rises with the rains; use repellent, particularly at dawn and dusk. See is Thailand safe for travel.
- Buddhist holy days carry a nationwide ban on alcohol sales, with exceptions for hotels, international airport terminals, licensed venues and designated tourist areas. The lunar dates are confirmed by the Thai Cabinet each year.
