If you only have time for one set of golden mosaics in Palermo, skip the queue at the Cappella Palatina and drive 20 minutes up to the Cathedral of Monreale instead. The chapel is gorgeous but small and always mobbed; Monreale carries roughly 7,600 square metres of mosaic, the largest cycle in Italy, for a fraction of the crowd. The pick most visitors miss is the Catacombe dei Cappuccini, where thousands of mummified Palermitans line the corridors. It sits in a quiet neighbourhood away from the centre and closes over lunch (roughly 09:00-12:30, then 15:00-17:30, around 3-5 euro), so most day-trippers never make it.
For the famous sights, timing is the whole game:
- At the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the Temple of Concordia survives almost intact only because it was turned into a church in the 6th century; go at opening (around 08:30) before the heat and tour buses, or aim for the first Sunday of the month when state sites are free.
