10 days in Thailand: a day-by-day itinerary
Ten days lets you sample Thailand's three faces — capital, north, and islands:
Days 1-3 — Bangkok
The Grand Palace and Wat Pho, the markets, Chinatown street food and a rooftop bar.
Day 4 — Ayutthaya
A day among the ancient temple ruins of the old capital.
Days 5-7 — Chiang Mai
Old-city temples, an ethical elephant sanctuary, the night bazaar, and a cooking class.
Days 8-10 — The islands
Fly south for the beaches — Phuket and Phi Phi, Krabi's Railay, or quieter Koh Samui.
Tip: use cheap domestic flights to save days of travel between regions, and pre-book island transfers in peak season.
Is ten days enough for Bangkok, the north and the islands?
Ten days covers Bangkok, Chiang Mai and a beach only when both long hops are flights and each base keeps at least three nights. Drop either condition and the trip turns into a run of check-outs. The arithmetic is plain: the day-by-day plan above already spends two half-days in transit, and swapping the Chiang Mai flight for the overnight train adds a 12-to-13-hour journey from Krung Thep Aphiwat station, converting a flight afternoon into a full travel day plus a slow morning.
Traveler types sort themselves quickly. A first-timer who wants temples and street food and does not mind two domestic flights should keep the three-stop plan. A slower traveler or a family with young children should choose north or south, not both: Bangkok for three nights, then either Chiang Mai with one side trip or a single Andaman or Gulf island group for six nights. The second base stops being a checklist and becomes a place.
Season decides which coast. The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi) takes the south-west monsoon from roughly May to October, while the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Tao) stay drier through those months and take their rain around October to December. A ten-day plan in July should therefore pair Bangkok with the Gulf rather than with Krabi, and a plan in November should do the opposite. Anyone whose dates fall inside a monsoon window has a stronger case for the north-only version.
Which route order avoids backtracking?
Land in Bangkok, travel outward in one direction and fly home from the last base instead of returning to the capital. Bangkok's two airports make this workable but also set a trap: Suvarnabhumi handles most international arrivals and is about 30 minutes from Phaya Thai on the Airport Rail Link, while many domestic low-cost flights use Don Mueang, 40 to 50 minutes away by road off-peak and up to two hours in rush hour. A same-day connection across the two airports is the standard way to lose an afternoon.
Northern arc: Bangkok to Chiang Mai by a roughly one-hour flight or the 12-to-13-hour sleeper, then either a minivan of three to four hours on the 762-curve road to Pai or a bus of about three and a half hours to Chiang Rai. Both side trips are out-and-back by road, so pick one and return to Chiang Mai for the flight out.
Southern arc: Bangkok to Krabi or Phuket is about one hour 20 to one hour 30 by air. From Krabi, Koh Lanta is roughly one to two hours by ferry depending on the boat and Phi Phi takes about 50 minutes to two hours depending on the boat. On the Gulf side, Koh Samui has its own airport, about one hour 10 from Bangkok, which removes the 9-to-13-hour Surat Thani train plus bus and ferry combination entirely.
If the three-stop plan is kept, Chiang Mai to Phuket runs direct in about two hours, so the order Bangkok, Chiang Mai, beach is the one that never doubles back. Fly home from the southern airport.
First-timer mistakes and what to skip
The mistakes that cost the most in Thailand are logistical, not cultural, and the biggest is simply too many bases. Four in ten days is the common version; each move costs a morning of packing and an afternoon of arriving, so a fourth base buys roughly a day and a half of nothing.
Paperwork catches people at the gate. Every foreign arrival has needed the Thailand Digital Arrival Card since May 2025, filed online within three days before landing, with a fresh card for every entry. From 15 September 2026 the general visa-exempt stay drops from 60 to 30 days for most eligible nationalities, with a one-time extension of up to 30 days available from immigration, so the permitted stay should be confirmed close to departure rather than copied from an older guide.
Coast timing is the quiet one. A Krabi hotel booked for August faces the Andaman monsoon, while the same budget on Koh Samui gets the Gulf's drier window; reversing that logic in November is just as common.
Worth skipping on a ten-day plan: a second island group, because the ferry days add up faster than the map suggests, and Pai plus Chiang Rai on the same visit, because both are dead ends from Chiang Mai. Overnight trains are worth keeping only when the train itself is the point; lower berths sell out weeks ahead, so a walk-up plan is not a plan.
| Leg | Mode | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok to Chiang Mai | Sleeper train from Krung Thep Aphiwat | About 12-13 hours |
| Bangkok to Chiang Mai | Flight | About 1 hour |
| Chiang Mai to Pai | Minivan, Route 1095 | About 3-4 hours |
| Bangkok to Krabi or Phuket | Flight | About 1 hour 20-30 |
| Chiang Mai to Phuket | Direct flight | About 2 hours |
| Krabi to Koh Lanta | Ferry | About 1-2 hours |
