Backpacking Japan Route: 3-Week Itinerary
Japan backpacking is more expensive than Southeast Asia but exceptional value relative to its quality. The classic route: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Hiroshima → Hokkaido (or Kyushu) → back to Tokyo.
Week 1: Tokyo
6-7 days exploring Shibuya + Shinjuku + Asakusa + Harajuku + Ginza + day-trips to Hakone or Kamakura.
Week 2: Kyoto + Nara + Osaka
Kyoto (4 nights), temples + Gion. Day-trip to Nara. Train to Osaka (2 nights) for food culture.
Week 3: Hiroshima + Hokkaido OR Kyushu
Option A: Hiroshima (2 nights) + Miyajima + Beppu (Kyushu hot springs, 2 nights). Option B: Fly to Hokkaido for skiing (winter) or summer hiking.
