Japan is a continental-temperate archipelago stretching 3,000 km north-to-south, with four distinct seasons and one of the world's deepest cultural canons. Visa-free entry for most Western travelers (with new JESTA system from late), excellent public transit (Shinkansen + Suica card), universally safe, and food culture that's arguably the best in Asia.

Japan travel guide
Japan blends ancient temples, neon cities and exquisite food into one of the world's great trips. The essentials:
- Tokyo — the electric capital; allow 4-5 days.
- Kyoto — temples, geisha districts and gardens.
- Osaka — street food and nightlife.
- Hiroshima & Miyajima — history and the floating torii.
When to go & getting around
Spring (cherry blossom, late March-April) and autumn (vivid foliage, November) are the most beautiful. A Japan Rail Pass makes the bullet trains great value on a multi-city route.
Know before you go
Carry cash (Japan is still cash-heavy), there's no tipping, and politeness and quiet are deeply valued. Ten to fourteen days covers the classic Golden Route.

Japan like a local: the smart route, regions & food
The classic route
First-timers should run the Golden Route: Tokyo (3–4 days) → Hakone or Mt Fuji (1) → Kyoto (2–3) → Osaka + Nara (2) → optionally Hiroshima/Miyajima. A Japan Rail Pass usually pays off across this.
Beyond the basics
Add Kanazawa (gardens, geisha district), the Japanese Alps (Takayama, Shirakawa-go), or Hokkaido (snow/summer flowers) and Okinawa (beaches) on a return trip.
Food to chase
Sushi and ramen everywhere; okonomiyaki and street food in Osaka (Dotonbori); kaiseki and matcha in Kyoto; konbini (7-Eleven) meals are genuinely excellent and cheap.
When to go
Late March–April (cherry blossom) and November (autumn leaves) are the most beautiful; both are busy. Summer is hot/humid; winter is great for snow and onsen.
Budget
Mid-range ~¥20,000–30,000/day. Carry cash (Japan is cash-friendly), get a Suica/Pasmo IC card, and no tipping.
