When to go and how to plan
Seasons split sharply by region. The Andes and Peru are driest from May to September — the standard trekking window, and when Inca Trail permits are hardest to get. Patagonia works in the southern summer, December to February, when days are long but winds fierce. The Amazon and the Galapagos are year-round, though the Amazon is easier in the drier months. Build in acclimatisation days for Cusco, La Paz and Huaraz, all above 3,000 metres, and book Inca Trail permits and Galapagos berths four to six months ahead.
