Helpful Packzup guides

The fast train is cheap. Getting off it isn’t.

The China-Laos railway is the best thing to happen to Laos travel in years, cutting Vientiane to Luang Prabang from a 10-hour grind to about 2 hours for $18 to $30. The catch is the stations sit out in the countryside. Luang Prabang’s is roughly 12 km from the old quarter and Vang Vieng’s is about 4 km out, so budget another 40,000 to 50,000 kip (around $2 to $2.50) per person for a shared tuk-tuk at each end. Forget those and the train’s value evaporates.

Two more things eat backpacker money here. First, you can’t buy tickets with cash at the counter, payment is UnionPay card or a QR app only, so booking ahead through an agent or buying early is the realistic move and seats sell out on popular dates. Second, the tuk-tuk drivers in Vientiane and Luang Prabang run the classic mid-route stunt: agree 50,000 kip, then stop halfway and demand more before driving on.

  • Agree the full price out loud before you sit down, and pay only on arrival.
  • Refuse any “shortcut” detour to a gem or tailor shop, it’s a commission run, not a route.
  • Drink Beerlao at the shop price, it’s genuinely cheaper than a Coke and the restaurant markup on it is steep.
