Money and Visa: How Cambodia Actually Works on the Ground

Two practical things confuse almost every first-time visitor, and both are easy once you know the local logic. Cambodia runs a dual-currency system. Prices are quoted in US dollars, ATMs dispense dollars, and the Cambodian riel functions mainly as small change for anything under a dollar, at a steady rate of roughly 4,000 riel to one dollar. You do not need to buy riel before you arrive; it comes back to you naturally as change, and you can spend it down before you leave.

Bring clean, unmarked dollar bills. Torn, taped, or heavily worn notes are often refused, and a recent shift matters too: the National Bank has been phasing out small dollar bills, so ones and fives are getting scarcer and some merchants prefer riel for those amounts. Keep small notes for tuk-tuks, markets, and tips, and avoid relying on a single large bill.

On the visa, most travelers have two routes:

  • The official e-Visa applied for online before you fly, currently around 30 dollars for a tourist visa, processed in roughly three business days, valid for a single entry and a 30-day stay.
  • Visa on arrival at the main airports and some land borders, similar price but paid in cash dollars, with a passport photo handy to avoid a small surcharge.

Use only the official government e-Visa site rather than the many lookalike pages that add fees. Either way the visa allows about 30 days and can be extended once, which is plenty for the 7 to 10 day itinerary above.

Yes — Khmer people are very welcoming. Stick to marked paths in rural areas (landmine risk in some provinces) + watch for bag snatchers.

Power, Plugs & Voltage in Cambodia

  • Plug types: Type A (North American / Japanese 2-pin); Type C (European Europlug (2-pin)); Type G (British / Irish 3-pin)
  • Voltage: 230 V
  • Frequency: 50 Hz
  • Driving side: they drive on the right (left-hand-drive vehicles)

Outlets here run at 230 V. Devices built only for 110–127 V (typical in the US, Canada and Japan) need a voltage converter — but phone and laptop chargers are almost always dual-voltage (check the label for “100–240V”) and just need a plug adapter.
