Ranked by Routing: Which Day Trips From Rome Pay Off and the One to Skip

The destinations on this page are not equal once you count travel time against time on the ground. Ranked by what you actually get back:

  • Orvieto (do this first). Direct Trenitalia Regionale trains leave Roma Termini roughly every hour, around 17 a day, reaching Orvieto in about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes from around EUR 10 one-way. No connection, no tour bus, and the hilltop is small enough to cover in an afternoon.
  • Tivoli (best value near Rome). FL2 regional trains from Termini or Tiburtina run about every hour and take roughly 47 to 70 minutes. Go any day except Monday, when Villa d’Este does not open until 14:00 and you lose the morning.
  • Ostia Antica (the smart Pompeii substitute). The Metromare line from Porta San Paolo at Piramide runs every 10 to 20 minutes and reaches the ruins in about 25 minutes on a standard metro ticket. Never plan it for a Monday; the site is closed.

For Pompeii proper, take the Frecciarossa to Naples Centrale in about 70 minutes, then the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi, roughly two hours door to door. Skip the Amalfi Coast as a day trip: at around 275 km and 3.5 to 4 hours each way, you spend most of the day in a vehicle for a couple of hours in Positano. Save that coast for an overnight.
