Is Mexico Safe to Visit? Region-by-Region Breakdown

Mexico safety varies wildly by region. Cancun + Mexico City + Oaxaca are very safe for tourists; some northern border states are not. Here’s the honest map.

Safe tourist destinations

Mexico City (especially Roma Norte, Condesa, Polanco, Centro), Oaxaca, Mérida, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, all safe with normal travel precautions.

Use caution areas

Tijuana (border zones), Acapulco (outside tourist zone), Mazatlán (outside tourist zone), Sinaloa state, Tamaulipas, Michoacán (except Morelia + Pátzcuaro). Cartel violence is real but rarely affects tourists in proper resort/tourist areas.

Crime types

Pickpocketing in crowded markets + on Mexico City metro. Express kidnappings (very rare, mostly from unmetered taxis). Beach drink spiking in party zones. Use Uber instead of street taxis. Don’t flash expensive jewelry/phones.

Health risks

Tap water unsafe — drink only bottled. Sun is brutal: high SPF + hat. Mosquito-borne illnesses (dengue, Zika) in coastal areas. Use repellent. Altitude sickness possible in Mexico City (7,350 ft).

Cultural safety

Mexicans are warm + welcoming, don’t be paranoid. Learn basic Spanish (helps in every interaction). Tip 10-15% at restaurants. Cash + cards both widely accepted in tourist areas.

Pro tip: Check the US State Department travel advisory by state before booking — it’s specific and updated quarterly. Most of Mexico is Level 2 (Exercise Caution); some northern states are Level 4 (Do Not Travel).
