The city comes back
Turkish schools return in early September and the effect is immediate. The neighbourhood restaurants that shut for August reopen, the concert and exhibition season starts, the Bosphorus is busy with commuters again, and the city stops feeling like a place people have left.
The weather does the rest. September in Istanbul is warm enough for ferries, rooftops and late dinners outside, without July’s humidity or the wind that defines the winter. It is the month everything works.

September averages about 26°C by day and 18°C at night, with roughly 32 mm of rain. The first half is close to summer and the second half turns properly autumnal, with cooler evenings from about the equinox. It is drier than October and far more comfortable than August.
The Istanbul Biennial
The Istanbul Biennial is held in odd-numbered years, which makes 2027 a biennial year. It runs from roughly September into November, spreading contemporary art across venues that are half the point – historic warehouses, former schools, hans and buildings that are otherwise closed to the public. Entry has generally been free.
The programme and venue list are published a few months ahead. Even if contemporary art is not the draw, the buildings it opens usually are.
What September is for
- The Bosphorus – the full ferry to Anadolu Kavagi, the fish restaurants, and the light, which is the best of the year.
- Walking the neighbourhoods – Balat, Fener, Kuzguncuk, Moda and Arnavutkoy without summer heat or winter rain.
- The cultural season – the Biennial, the opening concerts, and the museums reloading their programmes.
- The Princes’ Islands, now that the August weekends have cleared.
- Eating outside, which stays comfortable to the end of the month.
Prices and crowds
The peak. September, alongside May, June and October, is when Istanbul hotel rates are highest, and it is generally the most expensive of the four. Sultanahmet is busy, cruise traffic is heavy and the good restaurants need booking.
If cost matters more than comfort, late October or March deliver a similar city for considerably less.
