September is the month India dries out. The south-west monsoon normally begins withdrawing from the north-west around the middle of the month and retreats south over the next six weeks, leaving the country green, the air washed and the rates still low. Delhi eases to about 33°C with 128 mm of rain. It is the last cheap month before the October-to-March season opens.
The monsoon withdraws
Withdrawal is the mirror of the onset, and it runs in the opposite direction:
- From about mid-September – the retreat normally begins from Rajasthan and the north-west.
- Late September into October – it clears central India and the Gangetic plain.
- Into October and November – it withdraws from the south, and Tamil Nadu and the south-east coast then pick up the separate north-east monsoon, which is their main rainy season.
That last point matters and catches people out: Chennai, Pondicherry and the Tamil coast are wettest from October to December, not in the summer monsoon. If your trip is to the south-east, September is better than November.

- Delhi and the north – about 33°C by day and 25°C at night, with roughly 128 mm falling mostly in the first half. Humid, then increasingly pleasant.
- Rajasthan – drying and green; one of the nicer times to see the desert forts before the season prices arrive.
- Kerala and the west coast – still wet but easing; the Onam season usually runs into early September.
- Ladakh and the high Himalaya – the end of the season, with clear skies and cold nights; passes generally stay open into October.
- Tamil Nadu and the south-east – relatively dry now, before their own monsoon starts in October.
- The north-east – easing; Kaziranga and the Assam parks reopen around the end of the month or in October.

- Ganesh Chaturthi often extends into September, with the Mumbai immersion processions at the end of the ten days.
- Onam in Kerala can also run into early September.
- Navratri and Durga Puja begin at the end of September or in October, depending on the lunar calendar – and with Diwali on 29 October 2027, the Navratri cluster falls in October that year. Kolkata during Durga Puja is one of the great urban festivals anywhere.
- The Ladakh Festival, usually in early September, marking the end of the Himalayan season.
What September is good for
- Value. The last month before the high season, with hotels still on monsoon rates and the weather already improving.
- The last of the Himalaya. Ladakh and Spiti are clear and cold, with autumn colour arriving and far fewer visitors than in August.
- Green India. Rajasthan, the Deccan and central India stay green for weeks after the rain stops – a landscape most visitors never see, because they come in the dry months.
- Tamil Nadu, before its own monsoon arrives in October.
What is still closed
Most central Indian tiger reserves stay shut for the monsoon and reopen around 1 October, though some buffer zones open earlier. If wildlife is the purpose of the trip, September is a month too early.
Prices and crowds
Still low, and rising only at the very end of the month as the season approaches. Foreign visitor numbers begin recovering in October, so September is the last genuinely cheap month for the Golden Triangle, Rajasthan and Kerala.
