The weather, precisely
This is the number people get wrong about Rome. October, not January, is the wettest month, and November is close behind. It is not persistent drizzle – it is heavy Mediterranean autumn rain in bursts, often dramatic, and Rome’s ancient drainage floods streets and underpasses within minutes.
Between the showers, October is lovely: mid-twenties in the first half, low twenties later, and the low autumn light on travertine is the best photographic month of the year.
Clocks go back on Sunday 31 October 2027, after which it is dark by about 17:15 and the evenings change character completely.
The first two weeks
The window that started in mid-September runs on into early October, and it is the single best time to visit Rome: warm enough, everything open, crowds well down from the summer, and the food at its best. If you have a free choice of dates in the whole year, this fortnight and mid-May are the two answers.
Wine, chestnuts and the autumn table
October is when Roman food is most worth planning around.
- The Sagra dell’Uva at Marino, in the Castelli Romani hills south of the city, is traditionally held in early October. It is the region’s grape festival, and at its centrepiece the town’s fountains famously run with wine instead of water. It is reachable by train from Termini.
- Wine festivals across the Castelli Romani – Frascati, Velletri, Genzano – run through the harvest season.
- Chestnuts roasted on street corners from mid-October.
- Porcini and other mushrooms, and the start of the autumn menu in Roman trattorie.
- Puntarelle, the Roman chicory salad that only exists from about October to March, appears late in the month.
The Rome Film Fest
The Festa del Cinema di Roma is normally held in mid-to-late October at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, with screenings, premieres and public events across the city. Dates are announced annually. It lifts hotel demand for its run without transforming it the way Easter does.
Prices and crowds

What to pack
Layers, and a genuinely waterproof jacket – this is the month it matters most. Shoes with grip, because wet sampietrini cobbles are slippery and are the commonest cause of a bad day in Rome. A light jumper for the evenings, which drop to around 12°C. Sunglasses for the low autumn sun. Modest clothing for St Peter’s and the Vatican Museums.
