How to visit these well
Stay overnight. Almost every town here empties between about 5pm and 10am, and the difference is total — Hallstatt, Český Krumlov and Bled are genuinely peaceful in the evening and near-impassable at midday. If you can only day-trip, arrive before 9am rather than staying late.
Several have introduced visitor management in response to crowding: caps, timed entry to the headline sight, or day-visitor fees. Check before travelling, and book the main attraction ahead where booking exists — Pena Palace at Sintra in particular.
Go in shoulder season if you possibly can. May, early June, September and October give better light and fewer people, and many of these places are more pleasant in autumn than in August. And remember that people live here: keep noise down in the early morning, do not photograph into homes, and spend money locally rather than arriving with a packed lunch on a coach.
