April is New Zealand’s autumn, and one of its best-kept months. The summer crowds have gone, Central Otago turns gold, the light is long and low, and prices drop away from the January peak. Auckland holds about 20°C while Queenstown cools to 16°C with 5°C nights – and the clocks go back on 4 April.
The numbers
Two things to keep straight, because they trip up northern-hemisphere visitors constantly:
- The seasons are inverted. April is mid-autumn here, not spring. December to February is summer; June to August is winter.
- New Zealand’s daylight saving runs opposite to Europe and North America. It ends on the first Sunday in April – 4 April in 2027 – when clocks go back an hour. Evenings shorten abruptly just as the northern hemisphere is gaining light.
Autumn in Central Otago
The strongest visual argument for April. Arrowtown, twenty minutes from Queenstown, turns gold and red through late April as its poplars, willows and larches change – trees planted by European settlers in a country whose native forest is evergreen, which is why autumn colour here is concentrated in a few specific places rather than general.
The Arrowtown Autumn Festival is held in late April each year. Wanaka, the Central Otago vineyards and the road over the Crown Range are all part of the same window. It is short – roughly the last two weeks of April into early May.
ANZAC Day, 25 April
The most solemn day in the New Zealand calendar, shared with Australia. It commemorates the Gallipoli landings of 1915 and, more broadly, all New Zealanders who have served in war.
- Dawn services are held in towns across the country, starting before first light. They are open to everyone and attended in large numbers. Attend quietly; it is not a spectacle.
- 25 April 2027 falls on a Sunday, so the public holiday is Mondayised to 26 April.
- Shops and most businesses are closed until 1pm on ANZAC Day itself – a legal restriction, not a custom. Plan food and travel around it.
What April is good for
- Great Walks – the booking season for the Milford, Routeburn, Abel Tasman and the rest runs roughly late October to the end of April, so April is your last month with huts fully serviced and no alpine-skills requirement.
- The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, still in its non-winter window.
- Driving – roads are quiet after summer, and passes are open.
- Wine – harvest runs through Marlborough, Central Otago and Hawke’s Bay from about February to April.
- Value – well below the December-to-February peak.
Fiordland, whatever the month
Worth stating once and remembering: Milford Sound is one of the wettest inhabited places on earth, receiving several metres of rain a year, spread across every season. Rain there is not a ruined day – it is what switches on the hundreds of temporary waterfalls down the cliff faces, which is the reason the place looks the way it does in photographs. Go anyway, and take a raincoat.

What to pack
Layers, and a genuinely waterproof shell – New Zealand weather changes fast and the South Island can deliver four seasons in a day. Warm layers for Queenstown nights. Strong sun protection: New Zealand has some of the highest UV levels in the world because of its clear air, thin ozone layer over the region and low pollution, and people burn here in conditions that would be harmless in Europe. Walking boots if you are doing any of the Great Walks.

Where to go in April
- Arrowtown, Wanaka and the Central Otago basins – the reason to come this month. Poplars, willows and larch turn through mid-to-late April, and the Arrowtown river flats are the most photographed few hundred metres in the country right now.
- The Mackenzie country – Tekapo and Pukaki with autumn colour against the turquoise lakes, and the nights long enough again for serious stargazing in the Dark Sky Reserve.
- Fiordland – the last month of the Great Walks season, which ends on 30 April. The Milford Road is normally clear, and cruises run whatever the weather does.
- Rotorua and the central North Island – geothermal areas look far better in cool air, and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is usually still snow-free, though it is exposed and conditions turn fast.
- Hawke’s Bay – the tail of the grape harvest, warm days and open cellar doors, with none of the summer pressure on accommodation.
- Auckland, Northland and the Coromandel – comfortably warm in the first half of the month and almost empty once the school holidays end.
One structural point worth keeping in mind: New Zealand is long and narrow, so April in Northland and April in Southland are effectively different seasons. If you want warmth, go north; if you want colour, go inland and south.
