South Africa treats overstays through a system of being declared an undesirable person, and that status follows you on departure, not just on a future application.
The penalties scale with how long you stay past your permitted date. Overstay by less than 30 days and you are typically banned from re-entry for around 12 months. Overstay by more than 30 days and the ban jumps to at least 5 years.
