How to extend your stay if you need more time

The table above covers how long each passport gets on arrival, but it skips the question travellers actually run into: what happens when that window is about to run out. Hong Kong does allow visitors to apply for an extension of stay, and the process is handled by the Immigration Department rather than at the border.

The application uses form ID 91, and the fee for a visitor extension is around HK$230. As of 2024 the online service opens once you have 14 days or fewer left on your current stay, and it is meant for genuine visitors with a real reason to stay longer, such as a delayed flight or a family matter. Approval is not automatic, and online cases are typically processed in about one working day. Payment can be made by credit card, PPS, the Faster Payment System, or selected mainland e-wallets.

If you do not qualify for the online route, you submit in person at the Extension Section inside Immigration Headquarters at 61 Po Yap Road in Tseung Kwan O, out in the New Territories. Bring your passport, the completed form, and proof of the reason behind your request.

  • Treat extensions as the exception, not a way to live in Hong Kong on tourist status.

The cleaner move for most people is to leave and re-enter, but that is not a guaranteed reset and repeated short hops can draw questions from immigration officers, so a proper extension is the safer choice when you genuinely need a few more days.
