Setmana Santa in Catalonia
Catalonia does Easter differently from the rest of Spain. There are processions – the Gothic Quarter has several, and the Sant Medir celebration in Gràcia in early March is a local favourite – but the region has no Seville-style spectacle, and the emphasis is domestic.
The distinctive Catalan element is the mona de Pasqua. Godparents give their godchildren an elaborate cake topped with chocolate figures – increasingly sculptural, sometimes architectural – eaten on Easter Monday, 29 March 2027, which is a public holiday in Catalonia though not in much of Spain. Pastry-shop windows along Petritxol and in Gràcia are worth a detour in the fortnight before.
Expect closures on Good Friday and Easter Monday, and a busy, expensive Easter weekend.
