The north in October: the best month of the year
Hanoi in October averages about 28°C by day and 22°C at night, with roughly 235 mm of rain across fifteen days – and most of that falls in the first half. By mid-month the humidity drops, the sky clears and the city moves into the season Hanoians themselves rate highest.

The centre in October: the honest version
This is the part most October itineraries get wrong. Central Vietnam’s rainy season peaks now:
- October is the wettest month in central Vietnam by a wide margin – around 650 mm in Da Nang and roughly 755 mm in Hue. Hue’s rainy season runs September to January, with October and November statistically the wettest.
- Typhoon risk is at its height for the centre from September through November. A landfalling storm means cancelled flights, closed beaches and a day or two lost.
- Hoi An floods. From late October until about mid-December, parts of the old town are periodically under water – boats through the streets is not a metaphor there.
That does not mean skip Hoi An. It means give it two or three days in the first half of October if you can, keep the plan loose, and do not book the central coast as the final stop before an international flight.

How to structure an October trip
The efficient answer is to weight the itinerary north and treat the centre as optional:
- Ten days: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Halong or Lan Ha, Sapa or Ha Giang. All in the best weather of the year.
- Two weeks: add Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong at the end – still wet, but warm and functional – rather than the central coast.
- If Hoi An is non-negotiable: put it early in October and early in the trip, and keep a spare day.
Prices and crowds
October begins the northern high season for foreign visitors, so Hanoi, Halong and Sapa firm up in price through the month and cruise cabins book ahead. The centre is the opposite: heavily discounted, because the weather is against it. The delta and Ho Chi Minh City remain good value.
