April is the best month to visit Marrakech. The city reaches about 25°C by day and 12°C at night – warm enough for the pool, cool enough for the medina – the Atlas foothills are green and flowering, the Ourika valley is at its peak, and the punishing summer heat has not arrived. It is high season and it is worth it.
Why April wins
Marrakech has a narrow window where everything works, and April is the middle of it. By May the city is at 29°C and climbing; by July it is 38°C and the medina is genuinely hard work. In April:
- The medina and souks are comfortable all day, rather than a morning-only activity.
- The riad pools are warm enough to use, which they are not in February.
- The Atlas is green – snowmelt, wildflowers and running rivers in the Ourika and Imlil valleys.
- Trekking season opens. The Toubkal routes become walkable without winter equipment from around April, depending on the snow year.
- The desert works. The Agafay stone desert and the Sahara dune trips from Merzouga are pleasant rather than punishing.
Weather
April averages about 25°C by day and 12°C at night, with roughly 30 mm of rain – a handful of showers in an otherwise clear month. Evenings are mild rather than cold, which is the change from March.
One caveat: the chergui, a hot dry wind off the Sahara, can arrive in spring and push temperatures up sharply for a day or two, with dust in the air. It is unpredictable and short-lived.
The desert and the mountains
April is the month both work simultaneously, which is not true for most of the year:
- The Agafay desert, 40 minutes from the city – stone rather than sand, with camps that do dinner under the stars. Pleasant in April, unbearable in July.
- Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes – a long drive or an overnight, and the classic Sahara experience. April is one of the two good windows, the other being October.
- Imlil and Toubkal – the trekking season opens as the snow retreats. Check current conditions and use a qualified guide; Toubkal is a serious mountain and conditions vary by year.
- The Ourika Valley and the Setti Fatma waterfalls, at their fullest with snowmelt.
Prices and crowds
High season. April and October are the two peak months in Marrakech, with the best weather and the highest riad rates. Book accommodation and any desert trip well ahead, and expect the medina to be busy.
If cost matters more than perfect weather, March and November give you most of the same conditions for meaningfully less.

Light clothing for the day with a layer for the evening, sun protection, and comfortable shoes for the medina. Modest clothing remains appropriate, particularly for women.
