A spring month without the Easter surcharge
In most years Easter sits in April and dominates it. In 2027 it does not, and the difference is real: the coast and the châteaux have already reopened, the weather is spring rather than winter, and the prices are ordinary shoulder-season rather than holiday.
The one thing to watch is the French spring school holidays, which run for two weeks per zone on a rolling schedule from roughly early April to early May, so parts of the month are busier than others in the mountains and on the coast.

- Paris and the north – about 16°C by day and 6°C at night, with roughly 46 mm of rain. Showery and changeable – en avril, ne te découvre pas d’un fil is the local warning – but bright between showers and light until 21:00 by the end of the month.
- The Loire – the best month for the châteaux gardens: tulips at Cheverny and Chenonceau, and full opening hours restored.
- Provence and the Riviera – 18–20°C, bright, and green before the summer dries it out. Wisteria and cherry blossom.
- Normandy and Brittany – mild and green; the apple blossom in the Pays d’Auge is worth planning around.
- The Alps – spring skiing to mid or late April at altitude, then the valleys turn to hiking.
The gardens
April is France’s garden month, and several are genuinely worth building a trip around:
- Giverny – Monet’s garden reopens for the season around the start of April, and April is tulip and wisteria season before the June water-lilies. It is much quieter now than in summer.
- The Loire châteaux gardens – Villandry, Chenonceau, Cheverny and Chaumont, all planted for spring.
- Versailles – the Grandes Eaux Musicales fountain shows resume for the season in spring, on weekends.
- Provence – not yet lavender, which is June and July, but wildflowers and blossom everywhere.
Normandy and the coast
April suits Normandy particularly well. The D-Day beaches, Bayeux, Honfleur and Mont-Saint-Michel are all open and functioning without the July and August crowds, and the light on that coast in spring is exceptional. Mont-Saint-Michel’s highest spring tides – when the bay fills dramatically – are published in advance and are worth timing a visit to.
What April is good for
- Gardens and châteaux, at their best and without the crowds.
- Cities – Paris in April is genuinely lovely, and cheaper than May or June.
- Vineyards – bud-break in Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, with tasting rooms quiet and open.
- Value – in 2027 specifically, because Easter has already gone.
Prices and crowds
Moderate throughout, which is unusual for April. The rolling school-holiday zones lift demand in the mountains and on the coast in patches, but there is no single national peak. Paris rates are below May and well below June.
