May is when Egypt gets genuinely hot and genuinely cheap. Cairo reaches the mid-thirties, Luxor and Aswan regularly pass 40°C, and the Nile valley empties of visitors. The month opens with a cluster of holidays – Labour Day on 1 May, Coptic Easter on 2 May and Sham El-Nessim on Monday 3 May 2027 – and carries Eid al-Adha around 16 May. The early-May holiday cluster
Four dates land in the first days of the month in 2027:
- Saturday 1 May – Labour Day, a national public holiday.
- Sunday 2 May – Coptic Easter, the most important date in the Egyptian Christian calendar, with services on the Saturday night.
- Monday 3 May – Sham El-Nessim, a national public holiday celebrated by everyone: picnics in every park, coloured eggs, spring onions and fesikh, the salted fermented mullet that Egypt’s health ministry warns about every year – buy it only from a licensed shop.
- Around Sunday 16 May – Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, a multi-day public holiday. The date depends on the moon sighting and may shift.
Both holiday windows mean closed offices, heavy domestic travel to the Red Sea and the north coast, and busy sites. Book internal transport around them.
The heat is the constraint
This is not a detail to plan around – it is the plan. Aswan and Luxor in May regularly exceed 40°C, and the Nile valley has almost no shade and very low humidity, which means you dehydrate faster than you notice.
- Sites at opening, finished by 10:30. The Valley of the Kings tombs are unventilated and become genuinely oppressive.
- Middle of the day indoors – a museum, the boat, a pool, a long lunch. Egypt runs this way itself in summer.
- Drink constantly and take salt. Heat exhaustion is a real risk for unacclimatised visitors: headache, nausea and stopping sweating mean shade, fluids and cooling immediately.
- Choose accommodation with a pool, which stops being a luxury in May.
Weather by region
- Cairo and the Delta – around 35°C by day and 19°C at night, rainless, with khamsin days still possible into May.
- Luxor and Aswan – the hottest inhabited part of Egypt, frequently above 40°C.
- The Red Sea – hot at around 33°C but with sea breezes and water at 26–27°C. Still excellent, and the best place to be.
- Alexandria and the north coast – the coolest option, in the high twenties, with the Mediterranean starting its season.
- The Western Desert – effectively closed as a destination; daytime heat makes it unworkable.
What May is actually good for
- Price. Nile cruises and Luxor hotels are at or near their annual low, often less than half the January rate.
- Space. Giza, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings are quieter than at any other time except high summer.
- Diving. The Red Sea at 26–27°C needs the thinnest wetsuit of the year, and visibility is superb.
- Alexandria, which is at its most pleasant and is badly underrated – the Bibliotheca, the catacombs, the Corniche and the best seafood in Egypt.
Prices and crowds
Among the cheapest months of the Egyptian year for the Nile valley, and low for foreign visitors generally. The exceptions are the two holiday clusters, when Egyptian families fill the Red Sea and the north coast and domestic transport sells out.

Very. The water is 26–27°C, which is the warmest comfortable diving of the year, visibility is superb, and the coastal breeze makes the heat far more bearable than inland.
Should I worry about heat exhaustion?
Take it seriously. Humidity in the Nile valley is very low, so you dehydrate faster than you notice. Drink constantly, take salt, stay out of the sun between 11:00 and 16:00, and treat headache, nausea or stopping sweating as a signal to get into shade and cool down immediately.
