April is when Egypt tips from comfortable to hot. Cairo jumps to about 30°C by day, Luxor and Aswan into the mid-thirties, and the khamsin winds are at their most frequent. In exchange, prices fall sharply, the Red Sea is at its best, and the country holds one of its loveliest days: Sham El-Nessim, expected on Monday 3 May 2027 – just outside April, but the spring it belongs to starts now.
The heat arrives
April is the month the Egyptian calendar turns. Cairo at 30°C is manageable; Luxor and Aswan in the mid-thirties, rising through the month, are not for all-day sightseeing. The Valley of the Kings tombs are unventilated and get genuinely oppressive, and the temples are unshaded stone.
The structure that works from April onwards:
- Be at the sites when they open – 06:00 for a balloon, first entry at the temples.
- Stop by 11:00. Use the middle of the day for the boat, the pool, a museum or a long lunch.
- Restart after 16:00 for a second site or a felucca.
- Drink far more than feels necessary, and take salt with it.
Sham El-Nessim and the Coptic calendar
Sham El-Nessim – “the smelling of the breeze” – is one of the oldest continuously observed festivals in the world, with roots in ancient Egyptian spring celebrations. It falls on the Monday after Coptic Easter, and it is celebrated by Egyptians of every religion.
In 2027 Coptic Easter falls on 2 May and Sham El-Nessim on Monday 3 May – later than usual, because the Orthodox calculation puts Easter well after the Western date of 28 March. It is a national public holiday: families picnic in every park and green space, and the traditional foods are fesikh (salted fermented mullet), spring onions, lettuce and coloured eggs.
A genuine safety note on fesikh: it is fermented, not cooked, and every year Egypt’s health ministry issues warnings about botulism from improperly prepared batches. Buy it only from a licensed, reputable shop, or enjoy the rest of the spread instead.
Weather by region
- Cairo and the Delta – about 30°C by day and 15°C at night, with essentially no rain. Warm and dusty; khamsin days are most common now.
- Luxor and Aswan – mid-thirties by day and climbing. Early starts become non-negotiable.
- The Red Sea – the sweet spot: around 29°C with a sea temperature near 25°C. Hurghada, Sharm, Dahab and Marsa Alam are at their best right now.
- Alexandria and the north coast – pleasant, in the mid-twenties, and drying out for the summer.
- The Western Desert – the season is ending; daytime heat makes the White Desert and Siwa hard from mid-April.
The Red Sea is the answer
If your dates are in April and you want the best of Egypt, weight the trip towards the coast. The water is 25°C, visibility is excellent, and the reefs off Marsa Alam, Dahab and the Sinai are among the best accessible diving anywhere – the Blue Hole, Ras Mohammed and the Brothers Islands.
Dahab is also a wind-sports town, and April is a strong month for kitesurfing and windsurfing on the Gulf of Aqaba.

- Sunday 25 April – Sinai Liberation Day, a national public holiday marking the return of Sinai in 1982.
- Saturday 1 May – Labour Day, a national public holiday.
- Sunday 2 May – Coptic Easter; Monday 3 May – Sham El-Nessim. Together with Labour Day these create a long weekend, and domestic travel is heavy.
Prices and crowds
Falling fast. The Nile valley empties as the heat builds, and Luxor and Aswan hotels and cruises discount heavily – often to half of their January rates. The Red Sea holds its prices because it is entering its own season, and the late-April holiday cluster lifts domestic demand on the coast.

Loose, light, covering clothing – covered skin is cooler than bare skin in this sun – a wide hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen, electrolytes and a refillable bottle.
