May is the month France stops working. Four public holidays fall inside it in 2027 – 1 May, 8 May, Ascension on Thursday 6 May and Pentecost Monday on 17 May – and the French build long weekends around them with ponts, the bridging days. The weather is excellent, Paris sits at about 19°C, and the Riviera fills for Cannes and Monaco. It is the best-weather month before the summer, and the hardest one to book.
The four holidays, and the ponts
- Saturday 1 May – Fête du Travail. The only day of the year on which almost everything in France genuinely closes, including many museums and most shops. Lily of the valley (muguet) is sold on street corners and given as a gift, and anyone may sell it that day without a licence.
- Thursday 6 May – Ascension. A Thursday holiday, which means almost everyone takes Friday as a pont and disappears for four days.
- Saturday 8 May – Victoire 1945, marking the end of the war in Europe, with ceremonies at war memorials.
- Monday 17 May – Lundi de Pentecôte, a public holiday creating another three-day weekend.
The practical consequence is significant. The Ascension weekend (6–9 May) and the Pentecost weekend (15–17 May) are two of the busiest domestic travel periods of the French year. Trains, coastal hotels and countryside gîtes book out, and motorway traffic is heavy. Either reserve well ahead or plan to be somewhere fixed on those dates.
Weather by region
- Paris and the north – about 19°C by day and 9°C at night, with roughly 69 mm – the wettest month of the Paris year, arriving as showers and thunderstorms rather than steady rain. Long evenings, light until nearly 21:30.
- The Riviera and Provence – 22–23°C, sunny and green, with the sea still cool.
- Bordeaux and the south-west – warm and pleasant, the vines in full leaf.
- Brittany and Normandy – at their best: mild, green, and with the long Atlantic evenings.
- The Alps and Pyrenees – between seasons; skiing has ended and the high hiking trails are not yet clear, though the valleys and lakes are lovely.
Cannes and Monaco
Two events dominate the Riviera in May and both make the coast expensive and busy:
- The Cannes Film Festival, usually across the second half of May – largely an industry event with accreditation required for screenings, but the town, the Croisette and the red-carpet arrivals are public spectacle. Cannes hotel rates multiply and availability disappears; many visitors stay in Nice or Antibes.
- The Monaco Grand Prix, usually on the Ascension or following weekend – the whole principality becomes the circuit, and prices along the coast rise for a week.
Both dates are published well in advance. If you want the Riviera without them, come in early May or in September.
What May is good for
- Brittany and Normandy – arguably their best month, green and long-lit before the summer crowds.
- The Loire and Burgundy – gardens and vineyards at their freshest.
- Paris – terraces, parks and evenings that run until 21:30.
- Hiking in the Cévennes, the Dordogne, Alsace and the low Alps.
Prices and crowds
Shoulder rates in principle, but distorted by the holiday weekends. Early May and the last week are the calmer windows; the Ascension and Pentecost weekends are the busiest. The Riviera is expensive throughout because of Cannes and Monaco.
