December splits Rome cleanly in two. Until about the 18th it is a cheap, quiet, mild winter city with Christmas lights on – arguably the best-value fortnight of the year. After that it becomes one of the busiest and most expensive places in Europe. Days average about 13°C, and the Christmas season formally opens on 8 December.
The weather, precisely
Mild but wet and dark: about 97 mm of rain, and the shortest days of the year with the sun setting around 16:40. Snow is very rare in Rome and settles perhaps once a decade. What you will actually deal with is rain, early darkness and cold interiors – churches in particular.
8 December: the season opens
L’Immacolata, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, is a national public holiday – in 2027 falling on a Wednesday. It is the formal start of the Italian Christmas season: trees go up, nativity scenes are unveiled, and the city switches over properly.
In Rome it has a particular ritual. In the afternoon the Pope traditionally visits the Column of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza di Spagna, where Rome’s firefighters place a wreath on the statue at the top using a ladder truck. The square is closed and packed; it is free and genuinely local.
Presepi: the nativity scenes
Rome’s most distinctive December tradition, and a free one. Over a hundred churches display presepi – nativity scenes ranging from small and devotional to enormous mechanical tableaux with running water and moving figures.
- The nativity in St Peter’s Square is unveiled on Christmas Eve, alongside the tree.
- Santa Maria Maggiore holds fragments of what tradition venerates as the Holy Crib, and is the historic centre of the Roman nativity tradition.
- Piazza Navona’s market sells nativity figures alongside the stalls and carousel, running through to Epiphany on 6 January.
Christmas at the Vatican
- Midnight Mass on 24 December in St Peter’s Basilica – in practice it usually begins earlier in the evening. Free tickets are required and are requested in advance through the Prefecture of the Papal Household; demand far exceeds capacity.
- The Urbi et Orbi blessing at midday on 25 December, delivered from the central balcony of St Peter’s to the square below. No ticket needed – just arrive early.
- Vatican Museums closed on 25 and 26 December, and on several other feast days. Check before planning a day around them.
What closes
25 and 26 December (Natale and Santo Stefano) are both public holidays – in 2027 falling on a Saturday and Sunday. Most shops close, many restaurants close or serve a fixed festive menu by reservation only, and several major museums shut on the 25th. If you are in Rome on Christmas Day, book lunch in advance; walking out to find something is not a plan that works.
New Year
Rome sees in the new year with a free open-air concert and fireworks, in recent years centred on the Circo Massimo. Central roads close, transport runs extended hours, and restaurants sell fixed cenone menus at high prices booked weeks ahead. 1 January is a public holiday and the city is very quiet until the afternoon.
Prices and crowds
The clearest split of the Roman year. The first two and a half weeks are low season – cheap flights, cheap hotels, short queues, and the lights already up. From roughly 18 December to 6 January rates reach a winter peak and the centre is crowded. Shifting a trip a week earlier is the single biggest saving available in December. What to pack
A warm waterproof coat, layers to keep on indoors, a scarf, and shoes with grip for wet cobbles. An umbrella. Modest clothing for St Peter’s and the Vatican Museums, which a winter coat handles. Expect airport-style security and long standing if you attend a papal event.
