In 2027 it has an unusual advantage too: Easter falls in March, so April gets peak spring weather without Holy Week’s peak prices.
The weather, precisely
The one number that surprises people: April is Rome’s wettest spring month, at about 81 mm. It arrives as showers rather than steady rain, often heavy and short, and it is the reason a packable waterproof beats an umbrella here. Between them, the light is excellent and the temperature is close to ideal for walking a city best seen on foot.
Nights are still cool at around 8°C, so evenings outdoors want a jacket.
Wisteria, azaleas and the rose garden
Rome’s spring is short and specific:
- Wisteria peaks in mid-April, spilling over walls and pergolas. The Orto Botanico in Trastevere and the lanes of Monti and Trastevere are where it works; Via Margutta, just off the Spanish Steps, is the famous one.
- Azaleas on the Spanish Steps – every spring hundreds of pots of azaleas are banked up the Trinità dei Monti steps, usually from mid-April for a few weeks. It is free, it is brief, and it is the single most photographed thing in the city while it lasts.
- The Roseto Comunale, the municipal rose garden on the Aventine opposite the Palatine, opens for its short season from around late April. Free entry, and one of the best views in Rome.
- Orange blossom in the Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventine, next to the famous keyhole.
Natale di Roma, 21 April
Rome celebrates its own founding – traditionally 21 April 753 BC – every year. The Natale di Roma brings historical parades in costume, gladiatorial re-enactments and a procession associated with the Circus Maximus and the Forum area, plus events at the Campidoglio. In 2027 it falls on a Wednesday.
It is free, genuinely local rather than staged for tourists, and the best single day to be in Rome in April. State museums often waive admission for it – worth checking the year’s programme.
Liberation Day, 25 April
Festa della Liberazione marks the end of Nazi occupation and Fascist rule in 1945. It is a national public holiday – in 2027 falling on a Sunday – with ceremonies at the Altare della Patria and wreath-layings at the Fosse Ardeatine. Shops and many restaurants close, and it forms a long weekend that Italians travel for.
Prices and crowds
April is high season and busy, but 2027 is kinder than most years because Easter has already passed in March. Expect full sites, booked-out restaurants and firm hotel rates, with spikes around the 21st and the 25 April long weekend. What to pack

Modest clothing for St Peter’s and the Vatican Museums, where shoulders and knees must be covered; in April you can no longer rely on a coat to do it for you, so bring a scarf or a light shirt.
