Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive: Colombo to Sigiriya

Land in Colombo and drive straight into the Cultural Triangle — about 4–5 hours by private driver (roughly $50–70; the sane way to do Sri Lanka’s distances) to the Sigiriya area. Break the journey with a roadside king coconut and a rice-and-curry lunch — a dozen little dishes for a few dollars sets the tone for the week. Arrive by late afternoon for a first look at the Lion Rock glowing at sunset from a paddy-field viewpoint, monkeys commuting home along the wires. Early dinner of kottu roti — the chopped-flatbread stir-fry you’ll hear clanging before you see — and a briefing with your alarm clock: the rock demands dawn.

Day 2 — Lion Rock & Safari

Climb Sigiriya at opening (gates from 6:30–7am; about $35–36 foreign entry): the 5th-century sky-palace rises 200 meters from the jungle via mirror-wall graffiti, cloud-maiden frescoes and the giant lion’s paws that guard the final stair. Two hours up and down beats both heat and coaches. Budget alternative with arguably better views OF the rock: neighboring Pidurangala (about $3–4, a scrambly 30 minutes). Afternoon: a jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla (about $40–60 with jeep and fees), where wild elephants gather — in the dry-season ‘Gathering’, hundreds graze the reservoir grasslands together, one of Asia’s great wildlife spectacles. Curry, cold Lion lager, collapse.

Day 3 — Dambulla & Kandy

Head south via the Dambulla Cave Temple (about $10): five candle-lit rock chambers holding 150-plus Buddhas beneath 2,000-year-old ceiling murals — twenty minutes of climbing, an hour of gawping. Continue to Kandy (2–3 hours), the hill capital wrapped around its lake. At dusk, join pilgrims at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (about $7–10; shoulders/knees covered) for the drumming puja ceremony — the casket holding Buddhism’s most revered relic is unveiled to a sea of lotus offerings. Evening walk around the lake, dodging fruit bats the size of kites. Optional add: the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya if daylight allowed.

Day 4 — The Famous Train to Ella

The ride everything promised: the Kandy–Ella train, regularly crowned the world’s most beautiful (about 6–7 hours; reserved seats $10–20 — book ahead — or unreserved carriages for pocket change and doorway views). Tea country unrolls in slow motion: emerald terraces, waterfalls, cloud forest, pluckers waving from the rows. Break the journey at Nanu Oya for Nuwara Eliya‘s tea factories if you want a tasting (tours a few dollars), or ride straight through to Ella, the backpacker village in the gap between peaks. Sunset from your guesthouse balcony — most have one aimed at Ella Gap — with egg hoppers for dinner.

Day 5 — Ella’s Peaks & Farewell

Ella’s greatest hits before the airport run. Dawn walk up Little Adam’s Peak (45 gentle minutes) for the gap-and-tea-country panorama, then along the rails to Nine Arch Bridge, the colonial viaduct curving through jungle — time it for a train crossing (locals know the schedule; blue carriages, green tunnel, cameras everywhere). Reward: cafe brunch on Ella’s main street. Bigger legs can swap in Ella Rock (3–4 hours). Then the long drive out — about 5–6 hours to the airport, or break it beach-side: Mirissa’s whales and Galle’s Dutch fort are the classic extensions begging you to stretch this into the two-week version. You will.

What to Pack

  • Clothing: Light breathable clothes for humid coasts, a warm layer for cool hill towns like Ella, a rain shell for monsoon showers, and modest cover for shoulders and knees at Buddhist temples.
  • Tech: Sri Lanka runs 230V with Type D and Type G sockets, so pack a universal adapter. Download offline Google Maps and the PickMe ride app; local SIMs and eSIMs are cheap.
  • Documents: Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization arranged online before arrival, so check current rules for your nationality. Carry a passport valid six months past entry, plus copies and travel insurance.
  • Money: The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee. Cards work in hotels and city restaurants, but tuk-tuks, markets, and guesthouses usually want cash, so carry small notes; ATMs are common in towns.
  • Day bag: Sarong or scarf for temples, socks for hot temple stones, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a rain layer, and filtered water, since tap water is not reliably safe.

Where Sri Lanka Itineraries Go Wrong (and the Route That Fixes It)

The most common mistake is treating the island as compact. Roads are slow: a Kandy-to-Sigiriya leg of around 90 kilometres still eats about 2.5 hours, and the full Kandy-to-Ella train runs roughly 7 hours. Schedule those back to back and a whole day disappears into transit.

Skip a forced detour into Colombo on arrival. From Bandaranaike airport, Sigiriya sits a straight inland run of about 2.5 to 3 hours away, so head north first and loop clockwise instead of zigzagging across the map. One clean sequence works for most first trips:

  • Cultural Triangle first (Sigiriya, with Dambulla only about 30 minutes away)
  • Down to Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth and a night or two
  • Through tea country, then onward to the south coast

On the celebrated train, do not sit through all 7 hours. Board at Nanu Oya and ride the Nanu Oya-to-Ella stretch of around 2.5 to 3 hours, which holds the best scenery while a driver carries your bags ahead by road.

What to add: treat the Ella-to-coast drive of about 3.5 to 4 hours as its own half-day, not a quick hop, and finish near Mirissa or Galle so your last days need no backtracking toward the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for Sri Lanka?

For first-time visitors, 5 days in Sri Lanka covers the main highlights without rushing. If you want to add day trips, slower pace, or hidden gems, plan 2-3 more days.

How much will a 5-day Sri Lanka trip cost?

Using the Budget Breakdown table above, drawn from our Travel Cost Index 2026: Budget $12-25/day ($60-125 for 5 days), Mid-range $45-90/day ($225-450 for 5 days), Luxury $180-350/day ($900-1,750 for 5 days). Country-level averages, excluding international flights.

What’s the best time for this Sri Lanka itinerary?

Shoulder seasons offer the best balance of weather, crowds, and prices for Sri Lanka. See destination-specific best-time guide.

How do I get around Sri Lanka?

You do not need a car: the scenic Kandy to Ella train, cheap buses, and the PickMe ride-hailing app cover most routes, and self-drive is rare since foreigners need a local permit; most visitors hire a car with driver instead.

What should I pack for 5 days in Sri Lanka?

Pack light cottons for the humid coasts plus a fleece and rain layer for the hill country, where Nuwara Eliya nights get genuinely cold; bring clothes covering shoulders and knees, and slip-on shoes, for temple visits.

Should I book hotels in advance?

Book 2 to 3 months out for the December to March south and west coast peak and for Kandy during the Esala Perahera in July or August; the rest of the year a week or two ahead is enough.
