May is when the rains break in Bangkok. The southwest monsoon arrives and rainfall jumps from April’s 93 mm to about 217 mm, the haze is washed out of the air, and the city stays hot at around 34°C. It is low season, it is cheap, and the rain is far less disruptive than the number suggests – but Bangkok floods, and that is worth understanding.
What the rainy season actually looks like
This is the thing most people get wrong about Bangkok. The monsoon does not mean all-day rain. The pattern is:
- A hot, humid, often bright morning.
- A heavy downpour in the late afternoon or early evening, frequently intense, usually lasting one to two hours.
- A clear, washed evening afterwards, with the air noticeably better than in the dry months.
You lose an hour, not a day. Plan outdoor things for the morning and keep the late afternoon flexible, and May works perfectly well.
Flooding
Bangkok sits barely above sea level on a flood plain, and heavy rain overwhelms the drainage regularly. A serious downpour can put 30–50 cm of water on a street within half an hour, particularly in low-lying areas like Sukhumvit’s side sois and parts of the old town.
It usually drains within a couple of hours. The practical points:
- Traffic becomes catastrophic during and after a heavy fall – a taxi that takes twenty minutes normally can take ninety. The BTS and MRT are elevated or underground and keep running, which makes them by far the most reliable way to move in the wet season.
- Avoid walking through floodwater. It is street run-off, you cannot see the pavement, open drains exist, and there is an electrical risk near signage and poles.
- Carry shoes you can rinse and do not wear anything you mind ruining.
Weather
May averages about 34°C by day and 27°C at night, with roughly 217 mm of rain. It is one of the hottest months and the first properly wet one, so humidity is at its most oppressive.
Visakha Bucha and the alcohol ban
Visakha Bucha, which marks the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death, falls on the full moon of the sixth lunar month – usually in May. It is the most important Buddhist holiday of the year, with candlelit processions at temples after dark.
As with all major Buddhist holidays, alcohol sales are banned nationwide: bars close, shops will not sell and hotel service is restricted. The same applies to the Royal Ploughing Ceremony period in May, a state occasion at Sanam Luang that formally opens the rice-growing season.
What May is for
- Price. Low season proper, with rates well down on the winter.
- Clear air. The rains scrub out the PM2.5 that defines January to March.
- Green. The parks, the canals and the day-trip countryside all come back to life.
- Indoor Bangkok – the malls, the museums, the cinemas, the massage shops, which are what the afternoon downpour is for.
- Visakha Bucha, the most significant Buddhist night of the year.
Prices and crowds
Low. Foreign visitor numbers drop sharply after Songkran, hotel rates fall well below the cool season, and the city is easier to move around outside the rain hours.
