October is the turn of the Bangkok year. The monsoon retreats through the month – rainfall falls from September’s 336 mm to about 289 mm and then drops away sharply at the end – the humidity starts to break, and by the last week the cool season is arriving. It also brings the Vegetarian Festival to Yaowarat and two significant royal commemorations.
The season changes
The northeast monsoon replaces the southwest one through October, and the change is felt rather than gradual. The first half is still properly wet; the second half dries out fast, the humidity drops, and by the very end of the month Bangkok is in the cool season that runs to February.
That makes late October one of the best value windows of the year: close to cool-season weather, still on wet-season rates, and before the November crowds arrive.
The Vegetarian Festival
Usually falling in late September or October following the lunar calendar, the nine-day Tesagan Gin Je is observed by Thailand’s Chinese community. Participants abstain from meat, dairy, eggs and pungent vegetables, dress in white, and visit Chinese temples.
In Bangkok it centres on Yaowarat, which turns almost entirely vegetarian for the duration – yellow flags with red lettering mark participating stalls and restaurants, and the street food is exceptional and unusually easy for vegetarian and vegan visitors, who otherwise find Thai food difficult because of fish sauce.
The famous extreme piercing rituals are a Phuket phenomenon rather than a Bangkok one; the capital’s version is about the food and the temples.

October averages about 31°C by day and 24°C at night, with roughly 289 mm of rain – heavily weighted to the first half. Flooding remains possible early in the month, particularly when heavy rain coincides with high tides on the Chao Phraya.
Two royal commemorations
- Wednesday 13 October – the anniversary of the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a public holiday and a solemn national occasion. Expect commemorations, subdued programming and many Thais wearing black or muted colours. It is observed seriously; visitors should dress and behave with corresponding restraint near official sites.
- Saturday 23 October – Chulalongkorn Day, a public holiday marking the death of King Rama V, with wreath-laying at his equestrian statue by the Royal Plaza.
Government offices and banks close on both; shops, transport and tourist sites operate normally.
