February brings Barcelona its own winter festival. Santa Eulàlia, around 12 February, fills the city with castellers, gegants and correfocs for several days – free, local and far less touristed than La Mercè. The city warms to about 15°C, it is still low season and still cheap, and Carnival peaks in the week to Tuesday 9 February 2027.
Santa Eulàlia
Barcelona has two patron saints. La Mercè in September gets the crowds; Santa Eulàlia in February belongs to the city itself. Held around her feast day on 12 February, the Festes de Santa Eulàlia run for several days and are aimed largely at children and families:
- Castellers – the human towers, built in the Plaça Sant Jaume.
- Gegants and capgrossos – the giant figures and big-heads parading through the Gothic Quarter.
- A correfoc – the fire-run, with devils and fireworks, in a family version as well as the full one.
- Free museum entry on some days, and free concerts across the old city.
It is free, it is genuinely local, and it is the best reason to be in Barcelona in winter. If you go to a correfoc, wear cotton with long sleeves, a hat and closed shoes – sparks land on you deliberately.
Carnival
Carnival peaks in the week to Tuesday 9 February 2027, with Ash Wednesday on the 10th. Barcelona’s own celebration is modest, but Sitges, forty minutes down the coast by train, holds one of the best-known carnivals in Spain – a large, exuberant and famously LGBTQ+ celebration with two major night parades. The trains back are packed and run late; check the last service before you commit.

February averages about 15°C by day and 6°C at night, with roughly 33 mm of rain – one of the drier months. The light returns noticeably, and by the end of the month terrace lunches in the sun are realistic again.

- Calçots, in the middle of their season.
- Montjuïc – the castle, the MNAC and the gardens, with clear winter views and no crowds.
