Barcelona in April: Sant Jordi, the Best Day of the Barcelona Year

Reviewed September 2026

5 min read·Updated Sep 2026

April gives Barcelona the best day in its calendar. Sant Jordi on Friday 23 April 2027 turns the entire city into a book fair and a flower market at once – millions of roses and hundreds of thousands of books sold in a single day, on every street, with no tickets and no barriers. The weather reaches about 18°C, and in 2027 April escapes the Easter premium entirely, because Easter already fell in March.

Sant Jordi, 23 April

Catalonia’s patron saint’s day, and the closest thing Barcelona has to a national day. The tradition is simple and deeply held: you give a rose and you give a book. Historically men gave roses and women gave books; now everyone gives both.

What actually happens:

  • Las Ramblas, Passeig de Gràcia and the Rambla de Catalunya become one continuous market of book stalls and rose stalls, from early morning until late.
  • Authors sign books in the street for hours – hundreds of them, at tables along the main avenues.
  • The Palau de la Generalitat opens to the public, one of very few days it does, with its courtyard filled with roses.
  • It is not a public holiday – shops and offices stay open, which is part of why the streets are so full.

It is free, it is enormous, and it is the least commercial big-city event in Europe. Go early if you want to move; by afternoon the Ramblas is shoulder to shoulder. In 2027 it falls on a Friday, which makes it busier still.

Weather

April averages about 18°C by day and 10°C at night, with roughly 47 mm of rain – showery, but with long bright spells and evenings that now run past 20:30. It is the first month the terraces work properly all day.

The sea is still cold, around 15–16°C, so the beach is for walking rather than swimming.

Why April 2027 is unusually good value

In most years Easter sits in April and carries the premium with it. In 2027 Easter fell on 28 March, so April prices as an ordinary spring shoulder month – good weather, long evenings, and rates below May and June. Only the Sant Jordi weekend lifts demand.

What April is for

  • Sant Jordi, obviously.
  • Terraces and the Gothic Quarter, now warm enough to linger.
  • Park Güell and Montjuïc in spring, before summer heat makes the climbs unpleasant.
  • Day trips – Montserrat, Girona and the Costa Brava coastal paths at their green best.
  • Value, in this particular year.

Prices and crowds

Moderate, which is unusual for April. Book the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera several weeks ahead – the season is under way – but hotel rates sit below May, June, September and October.

What to pack

Layers and a light waterproof for the showers, comfortable walking shoes, and sunglasses. Evenings still need a jacket. See the Barcelona travel guide.
