April is the last month of the Pacific dry season and, for most of the country, the hottest. Guanacaste is parched at about 25 mm, the Central Valley starts catching afternoon showers, and the Caribbean carries on as it always does at 280 mm. Semana Santa falls at the end of March in 2027, which leaves April unusually free.
The rain map, which is the whole point
Costa Rica does not have a single wet season, and this is the thing most trip planning gets wrong. The country is split by a mountain spine:
- The Pacific side – Guanacaste, Nicoya, Manuel Antonio, Osa – has a clear dry season from roughly December to April and a green season from May to November.
- The Caribbean side – Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo, Cahuita – does not follow that pattern at all. It is wet most of the year, and its driest windows are September–October and, to a lesser extent, February–March.
- The Central Valley – San José, Alajuela – sits between the two and is mild all year.
So “the best time to visit Costa Rica” has no single answer. It depends entirely on which coast you are going to.
April on the Pacific
The end of the dry season, and it shows. Guanacaste is brown and hot, with the deciduous tropical dry forest – a genuinely rare habitat – leafless. That has one large advantage: wildlife is far easier to see in bare trees and gathered around the few remaining water sources. Howler monkeys, coatis and birds concentrate.
Beaches are at their best and driest. Roads are dry and unpaved routes are passable without difficulty, which is not true from May onwards.

- Guanacaste and Nicoya beaches – Tamarindo, Sámara, Santa Teresa – at the tail of the dry season.
- Dry-forest wildlife at Santa Rosa and Palo Verde, where leafless trees make spotting easy.
- Arenal and La Fortuna, with better odds of actually seeing the volcano than in the green season.
- Quetzal season – the resplendent quetzal nests roughly February to July in the highland cloud forests of Monteverde and San Gerardo de Dota, and April is squarely inside it.
- Turtles on the Caribbean – leatherbacks nest on the Caribbean coast from around March to May.
Juan Santamaría Day, 11 April
A national public holiday commemorating the drummer boy who died at the Battle of Rivas in 1856 during the campaign against William Walker’s filibusters. He is Costa Rica’s national hero and the international airport is named after him. In 2027 the holiday falls on a Sunday. Expect parades in Alajuela, his home town.
Prices and crowds
High season on the Pacific until the end of the month, then rates fall sharply as the green season starts. Late April is one of the better value windows – still mostly dry, already cheaper. What to pack
Light clothing, strong sun protection and a hat – April sun on the Pacific is fierce. Insect repellent. A light rain layer for the Caribbean and the cloud forest, which are wet whatever the Pacific is doing. Binoculars, which do more for a Costa Rica trip than almost anything else you can carry.
