Best Places to Visit in September 2028: The Best All-Round Month of the Year

Reviewed September 2026

If you can travel in only one month a year and the choice is free, take September. The Mediterranean keeps August's sea temperature and loses August's crowds and prices in the space of a week. The US national parks empty as schools go back. East Africa is still dry. Japan is past the worst of the typhoon season by the end of the month. The best place to visit in September 2028 is Greece, where the sea is at its warmest of the entire year and the islands have emptied.

What makes September 2028 different

Oktoberfest runs from mid-September to the first Sunday of October in Munich - despite the name it is mostly a September festival, and it is the single busiest fortnight in the Bavarian calendar. Book accommodation a year ahead or stay in Augsburg or Ingolstadt and take the train. September is also the tail of the Atlantic hurricane season, which statistically peaks around 10 September - the Caribbean, Florida and the Gulf coast carry real weather risk this month, and it is the one region where September is the wrong answer. Travel insurance with named-storm cover is worth reading properly if you go anyway. In the Aegean, the meltemi wind that disrupts ferries through July and August has usually eased by mid-September.

1. The Greek islands

The Aegean and Ionian reach their warmest sea temperature of the year in early September, after a whole summer of heating, and the crowds leave in the first week as northern European schools go back. That combination does not occur in any other month. Ferries run a full schedule until the end of the month and then thin quickly, so build in a buffer day if you are island-hopping late. The meltemi has usually dropped by mid-month.

2. Italy: Puglia, Sicily and the lakes

September in Italy is harvest season - grapes in Piedmont and Tuscany, olives from October - and the sea in the south stays comfortable into early October. Sicily and Puglia are the strongest picks because their summer heat is genuinely oppressive and September takes the edge off without losing the water temperature. The lakes, Como and Garda, are at their best now: warm, walkable and no longer at Ferragosto capacity.

3. Portugal and the Azores

The Atlantic coast peaks in September. Lisbon and Porto are warm without the July haze, the Algarve water is at its annual warmest, and the Azores are in their best stretch for whale watching and hiking - the islands run a mild, wet climate and September is the driest reliable month. Douro harvest runs from mid-September, and several quintas take visitors for it.

4. Croatia and Slovenia

The Adriatic holds its heat into late September and the Dalmatian ferry schedule runs until the end of the month. Prices on Hvar, Vis and Korcula drop sharply in the first week. Inland, Plitvice and Krka are quieter and cooler, and Slovenia's Soca valley and Lake Bohinj are at their most pleasant - warm enough to swim, cool enough to walk all day.

5. Turkey: Cappadocia and the coast

Cappadocia's balloon flights depend on wind, and September and October are the most reliable months of the year for them - flights are cancelled far less often than in midsummer or midwinter. The Turquoise Coast around Kas and Fethiye keeps warm sea into October, and the Lycian Way becomes walkable again as the heat drops. Istanbul is at its best in September, before the autumn rain.

6. Japan

Early September is still hot, humid and inside typhoon season, which peaks from August to September. By the last week the risk drops sharply and the weather turns excellent. If your dates are flexible, aim for the second half. Autumn colour has not started outside Hokkaido, so this is a month for cities, food and the Japanese Alps rather than foliage.

7. Utah and the Colorado Plateau

The Mighty 5 - Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef - empty out in September once American schools return, and the temperatures drop from dangerous to ideal. Zion's shuttle keeps running; Bryce at 2,400m is cool and clear. This is also the start of the aspen turn at elevation in Colorado and Utah, usually peaking from the last week of September into early October.

8. Munich and Bavaria

Oktoberfest runs from the third Saturday of September to the first Sunday of October and is 90 per cent a September event. Tent tables are reserved months ahead and Munich accommodation triples in price; the trains from Augsburg, Ingolstadt and even Salzburg make good alternatives. Outside the festival, Bavaria in September is at its most pleasant for the Alpine foothills and the lakes.

How to plan a September 2028 trip

Two habits do most of the work on a month-specific trip. First, book the thing that sells out before the thing that does not: permits, festival accommodation and internal transport go long before flights and hotels do, and a trip is usually shaped by whichever of those you miss. Second, check the date-driven items above against their official sources a few weeks before you travel - festival dates, park shuttle schedules and ferry timetables all move, and a page written a year in advance is a starting point, not a guarantee.

September 2028 travel FAQ

Where should I travel in September 2028?

Greece and southern Italy for the warmest sea of the year with no crowds, Portugal and the Azores for the Atlantic at its best, Turkey for reliable balloon flights in Cappadocia, Utah as the parks empty, and Munich if you want Oktoberfest.

Is September the best month to travel?

For the Mediterranean, arguably yes - it keeps August's sea temperature and loses August's crowds and prices within a week of schools going back. The main exception is the Caribbean and the US Gulf coast, where September is the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

When is Oktoberfest 2028?

It runs from the third Saturday of September to the first Sunday of October, so it is mostly a September festival. Munich accommodation is booked a year ahead and prices roughly triple; Augsburg and Ingolstadt are sensible alternative bases with fast trains in.

Is September a good time to visit Japan?

The second half is. Early September is still hot, humid and within the typhoon season, which peaks from August into September. From the last week the risk falls and the weather turns excellent, though autumn colour has not yet started outside Hokkaido.
