Spain in April: The Feria de Abril, and a Month Without Easter

Reviewed September 2026

6 min read·Updated Sep 2026

April 2027 is Spain without Easter – an unusual and very welcome combination. Because Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, Holy Week is already over when April starts, which leaves a month of genuine spring weather, the Feria de Abril in Seville, the patios of Córdoba coming into flower, and none of the Semana Santa pricing that normally dominates it.

The Feria de Abril, Seville

Seville’s spring fair traditionally begins two weeks after Easter Sunday, which in 2027 points to the middle of April. In its current form it opens on a Saturday night with the pescaíto dinner and the switching-on of the main gate, and runs for a week.

Confirm the exact dates with the Ayuntamiento de Sevilla before booking – the city has adjusted the format in recent years and publishes the calendar the previous autumn.

What it actually is: a temporary city of more than a thousand casetas – striped marquees – on the Los Remedios fairground, where sevillanas are danced from lunchtime until dawn, with a daily horse-and-carriage parade in the early afternoon. The catch is that most casetas are private, belonging to families, businesses and associations; there are public ones, but the fair is far better with a local invitation. Seville books out completely for the week.

Weather: proper spring

  • Madrid and the interior – around 19°C by day and 8°C at night, with about 46 mm of rain. April in Castile is genuinely showery; the Spanish proverb en abril, aguas mil is accurate.
  • Barcelona and the Mediterranean – about 18°C, with roughly 47 mm.
  • Andalucía – Seville and Córdoba reach the mid-twenties and can touch 30°C late in the month. The best month of the year for the region on foot.
  • The Atlantic north – green, mild and still wet, but the days are long and Galicia is at its most beautiful.
  • The Balearics and the coast – reopening for the season, warm by day, with sea temperatures still too cold for most people.

The patios of Córdoba

Córdoba’s Festival de los Patios runs for roughly a fortnight in early May, but April is when the courtyards are planted and the city comes into flower, and it is far quieter. The Mezquita, the Alcázar and the Judería in April, before the festival crowds, are one of the best things in Spain.

Xacobeo 2027: April is when the Camino fills

April is the start of the main Camino season, and 2027 is a Jacobean Holy Year – the Holy Door of Santiago cathedral is open all year and pilgrim numbers are expected at record levels.

What that means practically: the popular stages of the Camino Francés and Camino Portugués, and especially the final hundred kilometres from Sarria, will be far busier than usual from April onwards. Municipal albergues cannot be reserved, so either book private accommodation well ahead, start very early each day, or choose a quieter route – the Camino Primitivo, the Vía de la Plata or the Camino del Norte.

What April 2027 is good for

  • Andalucía. Seville, Córdoba, Granada, Ronda and the white towns are at their best: warm, in flower, and long before the summer heat.
  • Value. With Easter in March, April 2027 avoids the pricing that normally defines it, except during the Feria.
  • Long days. Summer time started on 28 March, so evenings run to 21:00 and the terraces are open.
  • Walking. The Camino, the Picos de Europa and the Alpujarras are all comfortable now.

Prices and crowds

Moderate, with one spike: Seville during the Feria, where rates multiply and availability disappears. Elsewhere, April 2027 is priced as an ordinary shoulder month rather than the Easter month it usually is – which makes it one of the better-value spring windows in years.

What to pack

Layers and a light waterproof – April showers are real, especially in the interior and the north. Add comfortable walking shoes, sun protection for Andalucía, and something smart if you are going anywhere near the Feria, where people dress properly. See what to pack for Spain.

The April 2027 calendar

  • Early April – Holy Week is already over; Spain returns to normal and prices fall back.
  • Mid April – the Feria de Abril in Seville, traditionally two weeks after Easter; confirm dates with the city.
  • Through April – the patios of Córdoba come into flower ahead of the May festival.
  • Through April – the Camino season opens, with Holy Year crowds; book ahead.
  • Friday 23 April – Sant Jordi in Catalonia: books and roses exchanged, and Barcelona’s streets filled with book stalls. Also Castilla y León Day.
  • Late April – the Balearics and the Mediterranean coast reopen for the season.

Frequently asked

Is April a good time to visit Spain?

In 2027 it is exceptional. Easter falls on 28 March, so April avoids Holy Week pricing entirely, leaving warm spring weather, long evenings and shoulder-season rates everywhere except Seville during the Feria.

When is the Feria de Abril in 2027?

Traditionally two weeks after Easter Sunday, which points to mid-April 2027. The format has been adjusted in recent years, so confirm the exact dates with the Ayuntamiento de Sevilla, which publishes them the previous autumn.

Can anyone go into the Feria casetas?

Not most of them. The majority are private, belonging to families, businesses and associations. There are public casetas, but the fair is far better with a local invitation, and Seville books out completely for the week.

How warm is Spain in April?

Madrid averages about 19°C by day and 8°C at night, Barcelona around 18°C, and Seville and Córdoba reach the mid-twenties, occasionally touching 30°C late in the month.

Does it rain in Spain in April?

Yes – Madrid gets around 46 mm and Barcelona about 47 mm, mostly in showers. The Spanish saying en abril, aguas mil is accurate, particularly in the interior and the Atlantic north.

Is the Camino busy in April 2027?

Much busier than usual. 2027 is a Jacobean Holy Year, and the Camino Francés and Camino Portugués – especially the last hundred kilometres from Sarria – will be at record levels. Book private accommodation ahead or choose a quieter route.

When are the Córdoba patios open?

The Festival de los Patios runs for about a fortnight in early May. April is when the courtyards are planted and the city is in flower, with far fewer visitors.

Can you swim in Spain in April?

Only if you are hardy. Air temperatures are pleasant but sea temperatures around the mainland and Balearics are still cold. The Canary Islands are the exception.
