Greece in April: The Best-Value Month, Because Easter Is Late in 2027

Reviewed September 2026

April 2027 is the best-value month in the Greek year, and an unusual one: because Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May, Holy Week does not start until Palm Sunday on 25 April. That leaves three and a half weeks of reopening islands, 20°C afternoons, wildflowers and shoulder prices before the biggest holiday in Greece arrives right at the end of the month.

Why the late Easter changes everything

In most years Greek Easter falls in April and takes the month with it – peak domestic travel, full ferries, island hotels charging their spring maximum. In 2027 it does not. Orthodox Easter is Sunday 2 May, so:

  • 1–24 April is clean shoulder season: the islands are opening, the weather is good, and the prices have not moved yet.
  • Palm Sunday is 25 April and Holy Week runs from then, so only the last week of the month carries Easter demand.
  • Good Friday is 30 April and Holy Saturday is 1 May – which is also Labour Day, a public holiday, making the end of the month unusually compressed.

If you want Greece at its best value, book the first three weeks of April 2027. If you want Greek Easter, that is a May trip.

What reopens, and when

April is the month the Greek season actually starts. Ferry timetables expand through the month, hotels on Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos and Paros open in waves, and by the last week almost everything is trading – because Greek businesses time their opening to Easter, and Easter is late.

That produces a specific effect in 2027: the islands will be more fully open in the last week of April than in the first, and a trip in the first week is still a partial one. Check individual hotels and restaurants rather than assuming the island is “open”.

Greece Budget Guide

  • Athens – highs near 20°C, lows near 11°C, and about 25 mm of rain across six days. The best month of the year for the Acropolis, the Agora and long days on foot.
  • The Cyclades – high teens, breezy, and green in a way they will not be again until next spring. Naxos, Paros and Milos in April are covered in wildflowers.
  • Crete and the south – low to mid twenties, and the best hiking weather of the year. The Samaria Gorge usually opens around the start of May, so check before planning around it.
  • The north and the mountains – cool, green, and the last of the ski season on the high slopes.

The sea is about 16–17°C. That is the one thing April does not deliver: it is a walking, ruins and food month, not a swimming one.

Free entry on 18 April

International Monuments Day, Sunday 18 April 2027, is a free-admission day at state-run archaeological sites and museums. It is one of only a handful outside the November-to-March window – the free first-Sunday scheme does not run in April.

As always, it covers Ministry of Culture sites rather than the Acropolis Museum, the Benaki or other private museums, and you collect a free ticket at the gate.

Holy Week begins, 25–30 April

The last week of April is the run-up to Greek Easter, and it is worth understanding even if you leave before the Sunday:

  • Palm Sunday, 25 April – the start of Holy Week.
  • Holy Thursday, 29 April – red eggs are dyed, and the Twelve Gospels service runs in the evening.
  • Good Friday, 30 April – the Epitaphios, a flower-covered bier carried through the streets of every parish after dark, with the congregation following behind holding candles. It is the most affecting public ritual in Greece and it is free to stand and watch.

From Holy Thursday, expect reduced hours, closures and a country focused entirely on one thing. Domestic travel is heavy from the preceding weekend, ferries fill, and Athens empties as the city goes back to its villages.

Prices and booking

Three weeks of shoulder rates, then a spike. Through 24 April, Greek accommodation is at spring prices with plenty of availability. From Palm Sunday, ferries, domestic flights and island rooms tighten sharply into the Easter weekend and stay expensive into the first week of May.

Book ferries and any island accommodation for the last week of April well ahead. See how much a trip to Greece costs.

What to wear

Layers and a light waterproof. April gives 23°C and sun and 14°C and wind in the same week, and the Cycladic wind is stronger than the temperature suggests. Proper walking shoes: April is when you actually cover distance, and the marble at the ancient sites is slippery after rain. Covered shoulders and knees for churches and monasteries, which matters more in Holy Week than at any other time of year.

The April 2027 calendar

  • Thursday 29 April – Holy Thursday; red eggs and the Twelve Gospels.
