Is Vietnam Safe to Visit? The Backpacker + Family Briefing

Vietnam is one of the safest destinations in Southeast Asia for both solo travelers and families. Here’s what to know.

Crime levels

Violent crime against tourists is rare. Drive-by bag-snatching from motorbikes happens in Ho Chi Minh City + Hanoi, use crossbody bags, don’t carry phones in outside pockets, walk facing traffic so you see motorbikes coming.

Scams to avoid

Cyclo overcharging (agree price first, in writing). Fake taxi meters at Hanoi airport (use Grab). Restaurants in tourist zones with no posted prices. Boat tour ‘add-ons’ in Ha Long Bay. Always confirm price + inclusions before saying yes.

Health risks

Tap water unsafe — drink bottled only. Pho + banh mi from busy carts is generally safe. Dengue + malaria in rural Mekong areas: use repellent + sleep with nets. Hepatitis A + typhoid vaccines recommended.

Road safety

Crossing streets in HCMC + Hanoi is terrifying for newcomers. Walk slowly + steadily, don’t stop, let motorbikes flow around you. Renting motorbikes without experience is a top cause of tourist hospital visits, don’t unless you can ride and have an IDP.

Cultural safety

Communist Vietnam is officially atheist but Buddhism + Confucianism are dominant. Modest dress at temples. Don’t discuss politics openly, especially the war. Photography of military, government buildings, airports is banned.

Pro tip: Get a Vietnamese SIM card on arrival (Viettel) — Grab + Google Maps + Google Translate are essential. Free WiFi is widespread but spotty between cities.
