If you come now, the trip is built entirely around the riad, the early morning and the evening, and the coast and the mountains stop being optional extras.
How hot it actually is
This needs stating plainly rather than softened. Marrakech in July averages 38°C by day and 22°C at night, with essentially no rain and very low humidity. The dry heat is more bearable than tropical heat at the same temperature, and shade genuinely works – but it also means you dehydrate without feeling sweaty, because it evaporates instantly.
- Be out before 09:00 and after 18:00. That is the whole itinerary.
- Drink far more than feels necessary, and take salt with it.
- Cover up rather than strip off. Loose long sleeves and a wide hat are cooler than bare skin at 40°C, and more appropriate in the medina.
- A riad with a pool and air conditioning is not a luxury in July. Confirm both before booking.
- Treat heat exhaustion as a real risk – headache, nausea and stopping sweating mean shade, fluids and cooling immediately.
Where to actually be
July is the month to treat Marrakech as a base rather than a destination:
- Essaouira – about three hours away on the Atlantic, roughly ten degrees cooler and reliably windy. In July the temperature difference is the single best reason to go.
- The High Atlas – Imlil, Setti Fatma, the Toubkal valleys and Oukaïmeden, all significantly cooler with altitude, and the trekking season at its peak.
- The Ourika Valley, where the riverside cafes put tables in the water.
- The Atlantic coast generally – Oualidia and Taghazout are both cooler than the interior.
The desert is out of the question in July. Agafay and Merzouga are for October to April.
Throne Day, 30 July
Friday 30 July 2027 is Eid al-Arch, Throne Day, marking the king’s accession. It is a national public holiday with official ceremonies, flags and decorations across the city. Government offices and banks close; the medina and tourist sites operate normally.
