June is when Marrakech gets seriously hot. The city reaches about 33°C by day and the rain has effectively stopped, which makes the medina a morning-and-evening proposition rather than an all-day one. It is also when prices fall, the riad pools justify themselves, and the Gnaoua World Music Festival fills Essaouira on the coast.
The heat changes how you use the city
Marrakech is a red city of stone and packed earth, and from June it holds the heat. The structure that works:
- Medina and souks before 11:00. The souks are covered and several degrees cooler than the open squares, which helps, but the walk between sights does not.
- The middle of the day at the riad. This is what the courtyard and the plunge pool are for, and a good riad in June is worth more than a good riad in February.
- Gardens in the late afternoon – the Jardin Majorelle, Le Jardin Secret, the Menara olive groves.
- Rooftops after sunset, when the city is at its best.
The Gnaoua Festival, Essaouira
Usually held in June, the Gnaoua World Music Festival brings several hundred thousand people to the Atlantic town of Essaouira for four days of Gnaoua music – the trance tradition of Morocco’s Black communities, descended from sub-Saharan slavery – played alongside jazz, blues and international acts.
Most of it is free and staged in public squares. Essaouira is about three hours from Marrakech, roughly ten degrees cooler, and windy – which makes it the obvious June trip whether or not the festival is on. Accommodation there books out for the festival dates, which are announced annually.

June averages about 33°C by day and 18°C at night, with essentially no rain. The nights are still pleasant, which is the saving grace – unlike July and August, June evenings are genuinely comfortable.
The chergui, the hot Saharan wind, can push daytime figures well above the average for a few days at a time.
Where to go instead of the city
- Essaouira – Atlantic, windy, about ten degrees cooler, and a genuinely different Morocco. The standard summer escape.
- The High Atlas – Imlil, Setti Fatma and the Toubkal valleys, where altitude does the work. Trekking season is in full swing.
- The Ourika Valley, an easy half-day with river-side cafes.
- Oukaïmeden in summer – the ski area becomes a cool high plateau for walking.
The desert is the opposite: Agafay and Merzouga are punishing in June and best left to spring and autumn.
Prices and crowds
Falling. June is the start of the low season, riad rates drop noticeably from the April peak, and the medina is quieter. For anyone willing to structure the day around the heat, it is good value for a high standard of accommodation.
