August is the last month of the Mexican summer and the quietest month on the Caribbean coast. The highlands stay green and mild at about 24°C in Mexico City, the whale-shark season peaks, and Mexican schools return towards the end of the month, emptying the beaches. It sits inside the active part of hurricane season and the tail of the sargassum peak – which is exactly why it is cheap.
The shape of the month
August splits roughly in two. Until about the 20th, Mexican school holidays are still running and coastal weekends are busy with domestic travellers. From the last week, schools return, the beaches empty and rates fall again – and the weather has not changed.
That final week of August is one of the genuinely underrated windows in the Mexican year: low-season prices with the summer crowds gone, and still six weeks before the Day of the Dead rush.
Weather by region
- Mexico City and the central highlands – around 24°C by day and 13°C at night, with roughly 170 mm of rain in late-afternoon storms. Green, comfortable and among the most pleasant months to walk the city.
- Oaxaca – green, warm by day and cool at night, quiet after the Guelaguetza fortnight ends. One of the best-value months there.
- The Yucatán and Caribbean – hot and humid at about 31°C, with around 130 mm of rain, mostly in short storms. Sargassum is still present but usually easing towards the end of the month.
- The Pacific coast – wet season at full strength, humid and dramatically green; the cheapest rates of the year at Puerto Vallarta and Zihuatanejo.
- Baja California – hot and dry, and the warmest water of the year in the Sea of Cortez.
Hurricanes: the honest position
August is inside the active period. The Atlantic season runs 1 June to 30 November, the Pacific from 15 May, and activity concentrates from July to October with the peak in September. August is more active than July and less than September.
What that means in practice: most trips are unaffected; when a storm is forecast, Mexican resorts and civil protection give days of warning and have well-practised procedures; and the sensible response is insurance that covers weather disruption plus a spare day before an international flight. It is not a reason to avoid the month, and the prices reflect a risk most visitors never encounter.
Whale sharks, and the turtles
August is the peak of the whale-shark season off Isla Mujeres and Holbox along with July, and sightings are close to reliable. Take a permitted operator and the earliest boat.
It is also the heart of sea-turtle season. Nesting runs through the summer on both coasts, and August into November is when hatchlings emerge – on the Oaxacan coast, in Riviera Nayarit, on the Riviera Maya and in Baja. Releases are organised by conservation camps; go through one rather than approaching a nest yourself.
What August is good for
- Price. The Pacific and Caribbean coasts are at or near their annual lows, particularly after the 20th.
- The highlands. Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca and the colonial cities are green, mild and uncrowded.
- Wildlife. Whale sharks at their peak and turtle hatchlings beginning.
- Cenotes. Unaffected by sargassum, cool in the heat, and quieter than in winter.
Prices and crowds
Low, and falling further through the month. International arrivals are modest, and once Mexican schools return around the third week, domestic demand drops away too. Only the first three weekends carry any real pressure on the coasts.
