April 2027 is an unusual month in Mexico, because Easter arrives early. Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, so Semana Santa itself falls in March and only the tail – the second holiday week, Semana de Pascua – runs into the first days of April. After that the country empties out, and what remains is the last of the dry season: hot, bright, and the final weeks before the rains.
The Easter tail, and then quiet
Mexican schools take two weeks around Easter, not one. With Easter Sunday on 28 March 2027, that puts the second week – roughly 29 March to 4 April – at the very start of the month. Expect:
- Beaches and colonial towns still full of Mexican families in that first week, with peak rates on both coasts.
- Buses and domestic flights busy, particularly out of Mexico City towards Veracruz, Acapulco and the Yucatán.
- From about 5 April, a sharp drop. Domestic travel stops, rates fall, and the rest of April is one of the quieter stretches of the dry season.
In most years Easter sits in April and dominates the month. In 2027 it does not, which makes April an unusually good-value month if you arrive after the first week.
Weather by region
- Mexico City and the central highlands – the hottest month of the year, around 28°C by day and 12°C at night, with very little rain. The altitude keeps evenings cool; the sun at 2,240 m is much stronger than the temperature suggests.
- The Yucatán and Caribbean coast – hot and dry. Cancún runs around 30°C with roughly 35 mm of rain, and Mérida and the inland ruins are considerably hotter, frequently 35°C or more.
- The Pacific coast – Puerto Vallarta, Zihuatanejo and Oaxaca’s beaches are hot, dry and at the end of their high season.
- Baja California – warm and dry, and the very end of the gray-whale season in the Pacific lagoons.
- Oaxaca and Chiapas – hot in the valleys, dry, and green only at altitude. Comfortable in the mornings, heavy by mid-afternoon.
Archaeological sites: go early
April is the month people underestimate the heat at the ruins. Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Palenque and Teotihuacán are almost entirely unshaded, and the stone radiates. The rules are simple and worth following: be at the gate when it opens, carry more water than you think you need, wear a hat, and be finished by noon.
The equinox serpent-shadow at Chichén Itzá happens around 20–21 March and again in late September, so April visitors miss it – which also means far smaller crowds than in equinox week.
Sargassum: the season starts
Sargassum – the brown seaweed that washes onto the Mexican Caribbean – has a season that runs roughly April to October, peaking from June to August. April is the beginning of it, and conditions vary enormously between beaches and from week to week.
Practical guidance: the Caribbean side (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum) is affected; the island west coasts – Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Holbox – are usually much cleaner, because they face away from the incoming currents. Resorts on the worst-hit stretches clear their beaches daily. If clear water is the entire point of the trip, November to February is the reliable window.
What April is good for
- Colonial Mexico. San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Puebla, Mérida and Querétaro are all dry and bright, and quiet after the first week.
- The jacaranda season in Mexico City, which usually peaks in late March and holds into early April, turning whole avenues purple.
- Diving. The Caribbean and Cozumel are at excellent visibility before the summer rains, and the Sea of Cortez is warming up.
- Value. From about 5 April, one of the better price windows of the first half of the year.
Prices and crowds
Two halves. The first week carries Easter-holiday pricing on both coasts; from the second week onward, rates drop to shoulder levels and stay there until the summer. International arrivals are also falling away from the winter peak, so the Caribbean resorts discount.

What to pack
Sun protection first – a hat, high-factor sunscreen and a refillable bottle matter more in April than a rain layer. Add a warm layer for Mexico City and the highlands after dark, where evenings drop to around 12°C, and light long sleeves for the ruins. See the Mexico packing list.
