May is Mexico’s hottest month and its last dry one. The rains arrive in the highlands towards the end of it, the Yucatán bakes, and the country is at its quietest between the Easter and summer holiday seasons. It is also when the whale sharks return to the waters off Isla Mujeres and Holbox, in what is arguably the best wildlife experience in the Mexican calendar.
Whale sharks: the season opens
From roughly mid-May to mid-September, whale sharks gather in large numbers in the plankton-rich water north-east of the Yucatán peninsula. Tours run from Isla Mujeres, Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Holbox, and the peak is usually July and August.
Three things worth knowing before booking. It is a regulated activity inside a federal protected area, so choose an operator with a permit; the boat ride out is long and often rough, which matters if you are prone to seasickness; and touching the animals is prohibited. May is the start of the season, so numbers are lower than midsummer but the boats are far less crowded.
Weather: the hottest, and then the break
- Mexico City and the central highlands – around 28°C by day and 13°C at night, dry for most of the month, with the first afternoon thunderstorms appearing in the last week or two. May is where the highlands are at their dustiest before the green arrives.
- The Yucatán – the hottest part of the Mexican year. Cancún runs about 30°C, and Mérida, Valladolid and the inland ruins regularly push past 37°C with high humidity.
- The Pacific coast – hot and still dry; Puerto Vallarta and Zihuatanejo are in their low season and priced accordingly.
- Oaxaca and Chiapas – hot in the valleys, with the rains arriving late in the month and transforming the landscape within a fortnight.
- Baja California – warm, dry and pleasant; the Sea of Cortez is warming into its best months.
Sargassum and where to swim
The Caribbean sargassum season runs April to October and peaks from June to August, so May sits on the rising edge. It varies week by week and beach by beach.
The reliable workarounds: the west-facing island beaches – Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Holbox – are generally much cleaner; the cenotes inland are unaffected and are one of the best things in Mexico regardless; and the Pacific coast has no sargassum at all.
The May holidays
- Saturday 1 May – Día del Trabajo, Labour Day, an official public holiday. Banks, offices and government sites close; marches in Mexico City.
- Wednesday 5 May – Cinco de Mayo. Worth being clear about: it commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, it is not Mexican Independence Day, and outside Puebla it is a far smaller occasion in Mexico than it is in the United States. Puebla itself holds a parade.
- Monday 10 May – Día de las Madres. Not a public holiday, but the busiest restaurant day of the Mexican year. Book well ahead, and expect the date to be fixed on the 10th whatever the weekday.
What May is good for
- Price. Between the Easter and summer peaks, and outside the international winter season, May is one of the cheapest months on both coasts.
- Space. Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Teotihuacán are quieter than at almost any other time – though you will want to be there at opening because of the heat.
- Cenotes and diving. Visibility in the Yucatán cenotes and off Cozumel is excellent before the summer rains cloud the water.
- Whale sharks, from mid-month, with fewer boats than in July.
The heat is the constraint
May is not a month for all-day outdoor sightseeing in the Yucatán or on the coasts. Structure the day around it: ruins and markets at opening, the middle of the day indoors or in water, and the evening outdoors. Mexican towns are built for this, and the plazas fill after seven.
Prices and crowds
Among the lowest of the year. International arrivals have gone home, Mexican domestic travel is between holidays, and resorts on both coasts discount heavily. The only pressure points are the Labour Day weekend and Mother’s Day on the 10th.
