Ramadan across Morocco
Ramadan is expected to run from about 8 February to 9 March 2027, with Eid al-Fitr following. Morocco sets the start by local moon sighting, so it can differ by a day from Egypt, Turkey or Saudi Arabia – confirm closer to the time.
Morocco observes it more visibly than Turkey and less strictly than the Gulf. What it means practically:
- Many local restaurants and cafes close during daylight, particularly in the medinas and in smaller towns. Riads, hotels and tourist-facing restaurants continue, and most riads will provide lunch for guests.
- Eating, drinking and smoking in public during daylight is discouraged and felt more strongly here than in some Muslim countries. Do it indoors.
- Alcohol becomes much harder to find – licensed hotel bars generally continue, many shops and restaurants stop entirely.
- Opening hours shift: sites and museums often close earlier, and the souks reopen and stay busy late into the night.
- Traffic is severe just before sunset as the country heads home for ftour, then the streets empty for an hour.
- Long-distance transport can be affected around the start and end, and drivers fast too – worth factoring into a long road day.
The compensation is the evenings. The medinas of Marrakech and Fes after the ftour cannon are the best version of themselves, and it is a genuinely communal month.
Almond blossom
Through February the almond trees flower across the Atlas foothills, the Ourika and Asni valleys and the Anti-Atlas around Tafraoute, where the pink and white against red granite is the best version of it in the country. Tafraoute holds an almond-blossom festival in February, with dates announced annually.
It is brief, free and weather-dependent, and it is the best reason to be inland rather than coastal this month.
